Elvis 2-Song 78 Acetate from Girls, Girls, Girls, 1962

Elvis only recorded for two major labels, Sun and RCA.  This Elvis recording is on Radio Recorders from Hollywood, California.  It is on an acetate record. An acetate record is a metal disc covered with a fine coating of special wax.  These recordings were basically used by recording artists to listen to different takes on a particular song.  Elvis was one of the artists that usually did not have too many takes (recordings) of songs.

The recording company would send these acetates to the artists to listen to, if the artists liked the recording or liked a certain take, then usually that particular version of the song would actually be the released version for the public.  Some songs Elvis would do more than his usually take.  he was very particular on want version would be released.

These two recordings are from the 1962 movie, Girls, Girls, Girls.  This is a 78 rpm and labels read HO-Take 12, THE WALL HAVE EARS, 2:29. Flip side is: JO - Take 6, SONG OF THE SHRIMP, 2:23. 

I have collected many Elvis recorded songs on many different labels.  Acetates are legitimate recordings. During the movie years Elvis would record soundtracks on several different labels, such as: 20th Century Fox, MGM, Universal Studios, etc.

Most of the time, there were maybe 6 to 8 test recordings on an acetate record.  Sometimes the acetates are referred as a "test" pressing. The recording company would usually have file copies, but also make sure the recording artists, producer and many song writer would have copies.  I have received some of the acetates from Elvis' entourage.  Elvis would actually listen to the acetate recording and decide that he did not like the recording and throw the acetate away or file it in a trunk..  Many acetates were thrown out at Graceland.  Sometimes the gate guards or Elvis' entourage would retrieve the recording and sell it or even in some cases give it to their friends.  Harold Loyd, one of Elvis cousins and gate guards, would actually retrieve many acetates and gave many away at the gates of Graceland to fans that would happen to be at the right place at the right time. 

Harold Loyd, after Elvis' death, realized that he had given thousands of dollars away and I always joked to him about it. He was a great guy and always was kind to the fans that hung-out at the gates of Graceland. Harold actually had a book released many years ago called The Gates of Graceland.

Anyway, this is your opportunity to have a valuable Elvis recorded song on a rare acetate recording.  Not many around still on vinyl. This is a 10-inch disc and actually still in pretty good playable shape. Still has a glossy look to it. Please see photos.  One side of the label looks as though it has a stain on it and the other side has some old tape on the right hand side to preserve the label.

The stain on one side is not like from coffee or anything such as that, it is from age. Apparently something was sitting on it for a long time and therefore produced the stain on the label.
