Description
Offered is an authentic original 1958 RCA Victor 78 RPM Elvis Presley single featuring "Hard Headed Woman" backed with "Don't Ask Me Why," both from the Paramount motion picture King Creole.
This is the original RCA Victor catalog number 20-7280, not the much more common 45 RPM release (47-7280).
The record bears the original machine-stamped matrix numbers:
- J2PB-3603-1S
- J2PB-3610-1S
These matrix numbers correspond to the documented original mastering for this release and are highly desirable to Elvis collectors.
Likely Vinyl Pressing
Unlike many earlier 78 RPM records that were pressed in shellac, this example has a high-gloss playing surface, lacks the coarse, grainy appearance typical of shellac, and produces a dull tap rather than a glass-like ring. These characteristics strongly suggest that it is one of RCA Victor's later vinyl 78 RPM pressings, produced during the transition from shellac to vinyl in the late 1950s.
While I believe this to be a vinyl pressing based on its physical characteristics, I have not performed any laboratory or destructive testing. Buyers are encouraged to make their own determination from the photographs and description.
Condition
This is a genuine vintage record showing honest age and use.
- Original RCA Victor black "Nipper" label
- Labels remain clean and present very well
- Surface scratches and scuffs consistent with normal handling and playback
- No visible cracks
- No visible edge chips
- No original paper sleeve included
Please review all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description and condition.

By 1958, the record industry had largely shifted to 45 RPM records, making original commercial Elvis 78 RPM releases considerably scarcer than their 45 RPM counterparts. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire an authentic late-era RCA Victor Elvis 78 with documented original matrix numbers.
The record will be carefully packaged specifically for shipping a fragile 78 RPM record, using rigid protective materials to help ensure safe arrival.
