Each printed on back with 1960 official details & info!
This is a fantastic collection of eight, vintage photographs of Elvis from 1960. They are not copies but original prints from when the photos were taken in January or February 1960. I’m not sure of the exact date but according to David Stanley’s ‘Elvis Encyclopedia’ it must have been after 20 January 1960 when Elvis was made Sergeant and given command of a reconnaissance unit for 3rd Armor. And, obviously, before his discharge the following month.
Each print is printed on the back with the identification that it’s:
"WINTER SHIELD" GRAFENWOHR, GERMANY and each is given an individual code number.
Additionally, on the back of each print, full information describes what the picture shows and identifies the participants. For example:
"MOVING OUT", SGT ELVIS PRESLEY CHECKS POSITION ON MAP AS HE DIRECTS JEEP DRIVER, PVT. LONNIE WOLFE, OF MASONTOWN W.VA. WINTER SHIELD EXERCISE WAS PLAYED AS REALISTICALLLY AS POSSIBLE. MACHINE GUNNER, SP4 HAL MILLER, OF TAFTVILLE, CONN, IS READY FOR "THE ENEMY" THIS TEAM COMMANDED BY SGT PRESLEY IS PART OF THE 32ND ARMORED SCOUTS, OF THE 3RD ARMORED DIVISION WHICH PARTICIPATED IN THE WINTER EXERCISE.
They each also have the following printed on the back:

According to the back credit they were taken by the photographer ‘THORNELL’. They are black and white, sized 10 x 8 inches (252mm x 205mm) and in excellent condition. Considering their age and their scarcity I don’t believe it would be possible to find better. There are some corner bumps (but these will not be visible once photos are matted and framed) and some minor surface markings which are mostly visible only if held at an angle to the light. The one of Elvis map-reading in his jeep has a crack in the emulsion along the bottom left but again this isn’t very visible and I don’t think it will show once framed. Any Elvis fan will be very pleased to add these to their collection.
I bought these great prints from a ‘Film & Pop Memorabilia Auction’ some years ago so I’m not personally aware of their history. However, they are almost certainly public relations photos sent out to the press by the US Army. Clearly, they are not any kind of fan material that would have been available to buy. If you are familiar with Elvis at all you would have perhaps have seen some of these photos in Elvis books. In these books the print condition is usually very poor as they would have been taken from copies of copies or worse. They will also have been cropped down from all that the originals show. By contrast, the prints I’m offering here are exceptional. They are clear and crisp and reveal all sort of hidden details. The clarity is amazing and along with the obvious period feel of the photographic paper they bring you a step or two closer to Elvis.
Here’s your one and only chance to own these eight fantastic, period photos of a young Elvis. As far as I’m concerned they are a one-off item that’s sure to be highly prized in future. These are the only set I have and I will not be offering any copies in future. I don’t believe that any buyer will be disappointed with this purchase and I have described the photographs and their background as accurately as I can. Please note that the photos don't have a black border - this is just my scanner.
