Description
Elvis (LPM 1382) ~ Alternate Old Shep Version (Matrix “17S” on Side 2)
Label: LONG PLAY
Vinyl: VG+
Cover: VG-
Indianapolis Pressing: “17S”
Further Details
This record contains the hard to find Alternate version of Old Shep. When familiar with the song, the difference can be noted subtly in the first verse with Elvis’ phrasing of the lyrics and the guitar accompaniment by Scotty Moore. Later in this alternate version Elvis sings “AND his eyes were fast growing dim…and HE laid his old head….”
The record plays very nicely, and the song of interest (Old Shep) sounds very nice without any distracting pops or skips. There is some very slight occasional background noise during the song, but it does not interfere with the enjoyment of the song in any way. It comes through loud and clear and strong – something that is hard to find with this record. The cover has some wear in the upper left corner. And there are seam splits along both the top and bottom edges.
Items of Note
It is curious as to how this alternate version made it to the pressing stage. Particularly because it is found on 2nd pressings of this record that were released with the 2nd cover that did not include ads on the back cover.
