Description

This single sided banded 12" acetate, playable at 45 RPM, is on a black audiodisc recorded by Sam Phillips at the Sun studio on or around Sunday 6th March 1955. The final version was released on 10th April 1955 on Sun Records 217. It has 3 identical holes surrounding the spindle hole, which forms the shape of a triangle. These would have been used to hold the acetate firmly in place and to prevent slippage during cutting at Sam Phillips’ Memphis Recording Studio.

The acetate contains 10 part and 1 full length (11 in total) tracks of the final released version of I’m Left, Your Right, She’s Gone ranging from 12 seconds to just over 2:30 minutes . However tracks 6, 10 and 11 have a false start introduction that is different to the final released version of this single.

This unique piece of Sun Records history features a piece of masking tape measuring 4cm x 2cm with the following written in blue pen in Sam Phillips' hand ‘Elvis’ on one line and ‘UR LEFT, I’M RT’ below (the song was originally copyrighted ‘Your Left, I’m Right, She’s Gone’ but was later changed to ‘I’m Left, Your Right, She’s Gone’) In between is the number ‘1’ circled, it also has the number 2 circled and crossed out. Assumingly this is because at the time the recording was made it was considered as being the ‘A’ side rather than ‘Baby, Let’s Play House’. There is also the numbering ‘204f’ in grease pencil in between the outer hole and the song run off.

The reverse side is blank but has two ‘bands’ and the words 'AUDIODISC 4231 Made in the U.S.A.' stamped in red surrounding the spindle hole. There is also a small sticker mark where a previous label may have possibly been.

The condition is consistent with an acetate of this age. There are several visible scratches and track #8 has been well played and the aluminium base is almost visible. Surface noise is evident but nothing that seriously affects the sound quality which on the whole is very good.

This historic recording was previously owned by Jim ‘E’ Curtin, a friend of Elvis and one of the most extensive collectors of Elvis memorabilia in the world, until 2006. The authenticity has been verified by Regency Superior Auctioneers of St Louis (since 1929), USA. Attached is a copy of the blacklined invoice from Regency.
