Description

Emidisc ACETATE – Live World Premier – MALCOLM ARNOLD conducting TAM O’SHANTER

10-inch Emidisc Acetate offered for its rarity. Both labels on this heavy-weight plastic acetate disc state “Emidisc made in Great Britain, EMI Sales & Service Ltd., Distributing Organisation” (see photo). Only one side contains a recording, the reverse side is blank. Handwritten in blue ink on the inner paper sleeve is “London Philharmonic, cond. M Arnold, Live World Premier, Royal Albert Hall”. Faintly handwritten in the top right-hand corner is “Arnold Tam O’Shanter” (see photo). There is no outer sleeve.
N.B. The premier of Malcolm Arnold’s overture “Tam O’Shanter” was at a Henry Wood Promenade Concert 17 August 1955 in the Royal Albert Hall, London, with the composer conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orch. (not the LPO as on the sleeve). It was received with tremendous enthusiasm at the time and was undoubtedly the most popular novelty during the 1955 Promenade Concert season but it was apparently never released on an LP conducted by the composer although later that year Arnold supervised the first commercial recording of the work by the Philharmonia Orch. under conductor, John Hollingsworth. When this was issued on CD by EMI in 1991 & 2007 it incorrectly stated that Malcolm Arnold was the conductor (source: Wikipedia).
The disc has several light marks on the recorded area (nothing too drastic). There are many smears/finger-prints on both sides but we have not attempted to clean the disc in any way. It is obviously playable but we have preferred not to play it in the interests of extending the life of such a rarity. There is a second drive hole near the label circumference to prevent the disc slipping during production (normal for acetates).
