Keep a' Lovin' Me / The Sun Keeps Shining (1956) Columbia 4-21496
Condition : VG (-1A matrix numbers, both sides)
This is the original 1st pressing of the Everly Brothers very first release. The buyer I originally bought it from graded it VG++, but I am a bit more conservative than he was. So few copies of this single sold in shops that the white label promo copies are rumored to outnumber red label stock copies like this one. I tend to believe it. In the 20 years I've been collecting Everly records, I've only seen one other copy, but I have seen several promos. As an added rarity, this single has -1A matrix numbers for both sides. Most collectors of Columbia records know that the -1A and -1B pressings are far more scarce than the standard -1C pressings (which it seems like 75% of original 1st pressings are). I can't stress how rare this record is or how much I wish I didn't have to sell it, hence the high starting price.
The record shows many light scuff marks and light scratches. I've played both sides and there are no skips, just some background crackle as you would expect from any 1956 single. There is one passage on the A-side (about 5 seconds) where there is noticeable surface noise or "hiss." It sounds like someone might have placed a very heavy tone-arm down on the record in that one spot and then lifted it up right away, causing a brief passage of heavy groovewear. Apart from that one passage, the music shows very nice fidelity. Not NM, but definately better than you'd expect from VG.
This is one of the nearly 100 Everly Brothers records I am currently selling on ebay. I have collected them over the course of the past 20 years and now it's time to let part of my collection go. GRADING - all my grading is done visually unless stated otherwise. I have been told I am a very strict grader. I simply grade my records the way I would want a seller to grade them if I were the buyer.
Mint : new/unplayed
NM : the highest grade for a used record. Should be virtually indistinguishable from an unplayed record with only one or two very minor signs of use (if any).
NM- : a small step down from NM. Any signs of use will still be minor (a few light surface marks, for example), but will be more noticeable than on a NM record.
VG++ : the same as EX on the European grading scale. Very clean and respectable condition. Usually a few minor flaws, but no real damage (i.e. - deep or feelable scratches). My VG++ is equivalent to what I've seen many sellers call NM.
VG+ : still a respectable condition, but signs of use and wear are more pronounced. On a record, this usually means more areas that have light surface marks or a few light scuffs, but the record won't be covered in them and there should be no deep scratches or gouges.
VG : obvious play wear will be present. Most likely the record will have many fine surface marks and scuffs and possibly a few feelable scratches, but nothing that looks like it would cause a skip.
VG- : moderate to heavy play wear. Many light scratches and scuffs and probably several more noticeable deeper scratches.
G : often, records in this condition are referred to as "collection fillers" and are kept until a better condition replacement copy can be found. Pretty well beat from a strict collector's standpoint, but will still be in one piece and should still play.
