"Babbacombe Lee" - Fairport Convention
1971 release on Island records - Cat. No. ILPS 9176
Gatefold sleeve with two inserts ( one rare)
Also 1st printing (A-1U & B-1U) with 'Porky' inscription
The first folk-rock 'Concept Album'? The story of John 'Babbacombe' Lee, who had an unfortunate childhood, and was later convicted on flimsy evidence of murdering his benefactor, Miss Keyes. When it came to his execution, the gallows failed three times. This meant that his life was spared, but he still had to spend 'life' in prison.This is a little-known fairport album, yet is still a great listen. The music, mainly composed by Dave Swarbrick, is atmospheric, poignant and at times very touching. It tells the story beautifully, and is much undrerrated.
Condition of vinyl - The vinyl is in lovely condition, unmarked, and it retains its original shine. It plays perfectly. Easily Excellent condition. It is a first print, by Porky, with 'PORKY' etched into the run-off on the A Side, and 'PECKO' on the B Side. Porky is a legendary engineer who worked with many of the great groups, such as Led Zep and Jethro Tull.
Condition of Sleeves - The gatefold sleeve is clean, unmarked and with no tears. The inner sleeve is the original grey one with lyrics. It is clean, with no marks or tears, just a tiny slit at the bottom where the record is wearing through. The inserts are the orange brochure (From Lloyd's Weekly News) telling the whole story of John Lee, and a facsimilie of the front of the Weekly News dated 29 Dec 1907. On the reverse is also some advertising for the release of the record 'To be released on Nov. 27th'. This was an additional insert for some of the earliest releases, and is very rare. Altogether easily Excellent.
Overall this is an opportunity to buy a much sought after record in Excellent condition. In the Rare Record Price Guide of 2008, a Mint copy is valued at up to £35.
All records I sell are from my own collection built up over many years, and always cared for. We've moved to a smaller house so, sadly, they have to go.
I don't claim to sell any in mint condition (as they have all been played), and would not sell any in less than Good condition.
Records will be posted in purpose-made cardboard sleeve with stiffener where appropriate.

Condition is calculated in accordance with the grading system in the Record Collector Rare Record Price Guide:-
Excellent - The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
Very Good - The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
Good - The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration etc.
