Fairport's second album and their first on Island with Sandy Denny is a more folk-based album than their initial effort and What We Did on Our Holidays is divided between original material and a few well-chosen covers.
It contains several of their greatest moments: Denny's "Fotheringay," Richard Thompson's "Meet on the Ledge," the obscure Joni Mitchell composition "Eastern Rain," the traditional "She Moves Through the Fair," and their version of Bob Dylan's "I'll Keep It With Mine."
But more than simply being a collection of great songs it allows Fairport to achieve their greatest internal balance - one of the finest balances of any major folk-rock group.

LABELS: The labels are clean, bright and unmarked with moderate spindle traces
VINYL Visual: The vinyl surfaces still retain their original deep glossy sheen but in common with Island releases of the period they have some pressing blemishes within the vinyl itself - but few other marks - these blemishes have no audio consequence and the other marks have very little (see detailed audio assessment below). Island LPs (and their singles too) from this period are always quite roughly pressed and never look as 'pristine' as other contemporary labels presses (no idea why) and this copy displays this perfectly with the blemishes and with the outer rim still retaining some extraneous bits of vinyl from the machine cutting
VINYL Audio: Outstanding - a beautifully recorded album (impressively produced by Joe Boyd who keeps the production very simple and true to the bands sound) and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my records prior to listing and its always a great pleasure to return to this one) there are no scratches, no jumps/sticks, barely any surface noise (just a touch between some of the tracks - nothing major at all) and no intrusive loud clicks/pops - there is the occasional, intermittent light 'tick' but again, nothing major, and two seconds (literally) of surface crackle on the fade-out to "I'll Keep It With Mine" at the end of Side One but otherwise, the whole album plays to a very high standard with great clarity, no groove-wear, no distortion, sounds great and is critically graded EXCELLENT for audio - very nice copy indeed
SLEEVE: The front laminated sleeve is also in EXCELLENT condition. The laminate has a deep glossy sheen and is clean and unmarked with just a little rubbing and record impression and the unlaminated back is similarly clean and unmarked with just a little rubbing. The edges are however, practically unworn and are sharp, crisp and square and the spine displays all text clear and bold
