For those not in the know, there's likely no bigger villain/contrarian/heel in the metal/punk scene than that of former Escape The Fate frontman Ronnie Radke, who has made a career out of provocations, beefing with other bands and throwing his two cents into every online discourse, most of the time with the full awareness of how much digital traffic his envelope pushing vitriol will encourage. It's rather apt then that the latest fifth full-length from his Falling In Reverse project bears the title Popular Monster, as Radke continues to lean ever further into this brazen character he has spent years crafting (or allowing his personality to trap him within). The follow up to 2017's Coming Home continues his utter disregard for genre parameters or campness with metalcore, hip-hop, country, and bubblegum pop consistently making strange bedfellows, as the tracklist boasts a bizarre juxtaposition of guest features from the likes of rapper Tech N9ne and Slaughter To Prevail deathcore frontman Alex Terrible on 'Ronald', whereas modern country megastar Jelly Roll makes an appearance on 'All My Life'. It all sort of works, but then it doesn't at all, but then again, that ugly monstrous yet strange familiarity is pretty much Radke's Modus Operandi for Falling In Reverse at this point.
