Label Conditions: Both little short of immaculate: very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces tiny, faint and hardly any. A superb record that offers fantastic clean sound, without doubt hardly played.

Cat Number: K 54003.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 116 grams. Around average, maybe a little below.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Quite scarce and finding the record in this condition is never easy. The very fragile cover is also nice but does have a name on the bottom of the inside back cover which can be seen on my picture.

Brief Info: The fifth Family album and now incorporating the skills of John Wetton who later joined King Crimson. His multi-instrument talents gave Family a different sound but of course with Chapman still providing his distinctive vocals, it was still very much Family. The album was well received and sold reasonably well but finding very fine all-round original copies has always proved hard. The multi-layered cover is very fragile indeed with single thickness card and it does not wear well. The red insert is often missing and rarely seen perfect – this one has just one corner crease, that apart, almost as made. Any forty+ year-old record in this condition are always at a premium and this is a beauty. All the pluses far outweigh any small negative for a name on the cover.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to – this has a name written on the inside back, how much this degrades is subjective, so my grading does NOT account for this. Any potential buyer must decide on this themself. An impossibly fragile and complex cover. Only the back that stores the record is double thickness. It has four pages of single thickness, shaped card with varying degrees of clarity for the five band members. The back of these sheets is a deep purple colour and can leave set-off on the white opposite sides freely which has largely been avoided. All faces are matt-finished and the whole concept is flimsy and fragile. All is held together with two thick original staples that are punched into the thick spine. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Cover Front/Visible Areas etc: All the visible front part look impresisve with barely any traces of grubbiness. The cut-out edges are mainly sharp with just the odd far right edge crease and bottom corner tip rubbing. These rarely escape often considerable thickening and major burring, any here is only light. An interesting design, but ultimately fragile, this really does look nice.

Cover Back: The back is massively prone to ringwear for obvious reasons. Dark single colour, matt finished with a record resting against it, few will survive with none. This has largely avoided any with any rubbing seen alittle on the very edges. A gentle semi-crease near the bottom left corner, more on the actual tip that has a small rub. I like the little creature near the bottom right that is seen to say – ‘Daft I call it’.

Cover Inner Gatefold ‘Pages’:

Inside cover (page 1 for a starting point reference): All the complex shape crisp and undamaged, No rubbing of any note to the purple ink. A faint semi-crease near the left bottom corner.

Page 2: Again all the shaped areas crisp and this is very clean with no set-off from opposite. A gentle hint of a semi-crease on the bottom right corner. The actual tip a little ‘softened’.

Page 3: Deep purple again and almost the same page 1.

Page 4: Practically the same as page 2.

Page 5: again similar to 1 and 3. But a little light creasing to the left edge and a little more creasing to the bottom tip.

Page 6: refer to page 2 and 4. Both the exposed staples are as made, solid with no loosening at all.

Page 7: refer to page 3, almost the same again, mostly very crisp and neat edges, odd tiny press mark being ultra critical.

Page 8: white again, this is inside back cover, ultra tiny set-off traces (but look hard) odd minor burr trace to edges. The most significant issue is the writing near the bottom right edge. Reasonably small and neat, and when the cover is closed, not in view which arguably makes it less crucial.

Top Edges: Some slight burring and light thickening near the centre and towards the right. Given the design and card thickness, this will prove very difficult to avoid, and here, it’s only very light indeed with minimal visual detraction. There are NO tears and any rubbing fine and light.

Bottom Edges: Being the storage edges, these have thickened a little more, but not too much really. All still respectably neat.

Right Edges, and Type: With four single thickness card edges to form the ‘pages’, these are in quite fine condition with most of any burring or thickening on the third page in. With only a single thickness spine, some mild tilt is near unavoidable, meaing the right edges will not align perfectly. Hence the odd edge more in relief will wear a little more than others and that the case here. That said, any wear to these fragile thin edges is very mild indeed and again, little detracts. ALL are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: A single thickness spine that has to support the pages weight. So obviously flimsy and delicate. It is very wide and is uncrushed as such and only has a gentle tilt to right. Being honest, I have never seen one of these that has tilted a little, and this possibly the least yet. Both the original staples are rock solid and totally unloosened with no tarnishing at all. Solid, straight and folded square, all the right edges meet up closely and as close to parallel as possible. All text is perfect and unworn as can be seen on my close-up picture and note too the original staples.

Corners: The corners do have a little creasing, mostly to the right (square) ones. Any to the spine ones are quite mild considering the format. In terms of shape – fine to very fine – some a little better, some a little less so. This cover has so many ‘corners’.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this immensely fragile, complex and near unique early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This inventive item should please many collectors – but I remind again – it does have writing inside, albeit quite conspicuous and reasonably small and neat – present nonetheless.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(+): the only of note is a quite small corner crease to the top left. Guaranteed original and printed red on one side and white on the back. This is clean, fresh and any marks or handling traces practically zero. Often missing, and this will prove hard to find much better.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: gently aged with very mild discolour only and all edges secure with no repairs. This has two open windows, both crisp and neat and was never lined. Very little creasing at all, minor crinkle only near the corners.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and side one arguably even better with little to fault at all. Ultra fine and faint surface traces on two as seen critically under bright angled light, but few will better this. An impressive visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence and with sound to match. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. No pressing or cutting noises, not always the case on this album and few copies will match or outperform this first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
