Obscure but brilliant late 60's early 70's psych / prog rock album!!

Here's a great copy of this relatively undiscovered gem. A truly excellent album of psych/prog that deserves to be far more known in collectors circles than it is at present. The vinyl is in lovely condition. One to get while it's still reasonably priced.

Produced by Eddie Jason, 1970's "Fat" is a fantastic and completely overlooked near-classic psych / prog rock album (a couple of online references say RCA only pressed 400 copies of this their debut album). At least to my ears this Massachusetts-based quintet seemed to have everything required for major stardom - a great singer in Peter Newland, killer chops including a pair of impressive lead guitarists in Michael Benson and James Kaminski, and a rock steady rhythm section in drummer William Benjamin and bassist Guy DeVito. That line up coupled with more than their share of first-rate material that was simultaneously tuneful and lyrically interesting made for a great LP. No wonder they met with zilch in terms of commercial success. With Benson, Kaminski and Newland sharing writing credits, tracks like 'House On the Corner', 'Mine Eyes Have Seen' (with an unexpected jazzy closing segment, the Cream inspired 'Country Girl', and the ballad 'Lonely Lady' (sounding uncannily like something a 1990s band like Creed might have recorded) were tailor made for FM radio. All hyperbole aside, these guys had it all! They play 60's style hard rock with strong West Coast/Bay Area influences. The excellent guitar work as well as some of the arrangements reminds me of mid-period Quicksilver in a lot of ways (no piano here though). There is also the occasional progressive passage as well. All in all, Fat were a very professional sounding band with strong songs, creative arrangements, excellent guitar, and great vocals. I would recommend them to any underground rock collector. Fat developed a regional following in New England (based in the North Hampton-Springfield area of Massachusetts) in the late sixties and through the seventies but never broke nationally. Self-titled Fat (1970) was their only major label album. Few copies exist. The album highlights Peter Newland's melancholy but beautiful rock vocals and visionary poetic lyrics. The band can most likely be compared to the Allman Brothers, for their penchant for semi-progressive arrangements and dual-guitar driven sound. Their songs are either chord based (House on the Corner) or guitar riff based (Journey) compositions with a couple of blues (Duck Sweat) thrown in as well. Lonely Lady, with its open chordal comping, sounds like something that could sit well on Stephen Stills' Manassas or Stephen Stills 2 albums.

Original UK RCA 1st pressing of this classic and sought after early 1970's prog/psych/rock album.

Records / CDs Are Graded In The Following Way:

MINT (M): The record / cd displays barely any signs of use, if any, with no marks or deterioration in sound quality. Extra items and cover are near perfect.

EXCELLENT (EX): Shows only minor signs of being played with very little lessening in sound quality. The Cover and extras will have some light wear and or creasing

VERY GOOD (VG): Has been played many times but has no major deterioration in sound quality, despite some noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratches. Cover and extras will have normal wear and tear but no major defects

GOOD (G): Has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and any extras may suffer from folding, scuffing, split spine, discoloration etc.

FAIR (F): The record is still just playable and has considerable surface noise and may even jump. Cover and contents will be torn stained and/or defaced.

POOR (P): The record will not play properly. Covers badly damaged or partly missing

+ or - : Indicates slightly better (+) or slightly lesser (-) condition than main grade
