When Time Of The Last Persecution saw Bill Fay restored to life, as though in a transformed body, in 1971, the singular solo musician was already something of an outlier: a London songwriter steeped in Biblical imagery and post-psychedelic disquiet. His second LP, now out again on Proper Records, rouses group moods of folk austerity amid end-of-times unease, where the dread and devotion, twinned deviously together, peek through the quietly desperate 'Omega Day' and 'Dust Filled Room' to the fevered title track, where faith and collapse seem inseparable. Backed by guitarist Ray Russell and drummer Alan Rushton, the record's desirously dour tone effectively ended his major-label career, sending him into decades of silence before his rediscovery in the 2000s by admirers like Jeff Tweedy and Nick Cave.
