Fess Williams led bands in both Chicago and New York in the 1920s and early 1930s. He cut for Victor in 1929-1930, and his songs are pretty doggone fun but not always at the top of the deck when it comes to thinking of hot jazz bands from Chicago. I guess there was just too much competition.

This pair are from a session in Camden, New Jersey on September 20, 1929 – in the last few weeks you could have sold your stock portfolio for something worthwhile.

Didja know that Fess Williams was also the uncle of modern jazz great Charles Mingus.
