Southern Rock, Blues, Boogey und Heavyrock treffen hier in unnachahmlicher Weise aufeinander. ZZ Top, Blackfoot, klar, kennt man, aber das hier geht tiefer. Dreckig, erdig, ehrlich und vorallem verdammt entschlossen geht dieser US Vierer zuwerke, knallt uns straighte, schmierige Riffs und wuchtige Beats um die Ohren, die uns bei den Weichteilen packen und herumschleudern. Die Melodien sind ebenso erdig wie die gesamte Ausstrahlung des Materials. Der Gesang bewegt sich in mittleren Tiefen, von Whiskey, Bier und Zigaretten geformt. Kleine Details wie Slide Soli oder rhythmische Kabinettstückchen schmücken die sehr hingebungsvoll zelebrierten Powerrocker auf diesem Album noch zusätzlich aus. Was will man als Genrefreak mehr? Five Horse Johnson sind weitab jeglicher Innovation, doch sie sind einfach cool.

Five Horse Johnson is an American blues rock band from Toledo, Ohio, formed in 1995. They have toured with such popular groups as Clutch and Halfway to Gone. The band combines hard rock, blues and other influences into a blend of stoner rock/blues music they call their own. Their second to latest album The Mystery Spot featured many special guests including drummer Jean-Paul Gaster from Clutch; on a related note they have played a worldwide tour with Clutch and Dub Trio.

"Mississippi King" from The No. 6 Dance is featured on Tony Hawk's Underground and NHL 2K6, and "I Can't Shake It" from The Mystery Spot is featured on MLB 2K7.

Eric Oblander was featured on the Clutch album From Beale Street to Oblivion.

After a bit of a hiatus, Five Horse Johnson have regrouped. They played some European shows in mid-2011 and will be working on the album "The Taking of Black Heart" release through Small Stone Records.
