KILLER 1970 UK single by Phil Collins' first band, Flaming Youth, "Man Woman and Child" b/w "Drifting" on the Fontana label - both sides do NOT appear on their "Arc II" LP. Making this a very highly sought after rarity indeed. And if you're a fan of the LP, this is just as good, if not better, especially the B-side (as is often the case). "Man, Woman and Child" opens with a big, booming doomsday tympani, and then settles into a nice strumming acoustic guitar rhythm. After that big dramatic opening, it's a little odd that this one turns into a rather catchy singalong popsike tune, but the massed chorale vocals and stately Hammond organ bring up the pomp factor to near the level of the album. But the flip, "Drifting", is a real surprise - a KILLER slice of chunky UK freakbeat proto-glam with choppy rhythm, funky organ, swooping and diving bass guitar, and almost operatic over-the-top vocals on the soaring choruses! It's as close as this band ever got to northern soul or freakbeat, but the over-the-top vocals tend to slide this one close to early Freddie Mercury territory, most notably his pre-Queen band Smile. It's a wild one, for sure, and the band lets its hair down a bit (back when Phil Collins HAD hair to let down), and it's one of my favorite songs by the band. So why was it tucked on to the B-side of their only non-LP single? I guess it just didn't fit on the concept LP. This is an original 1970 pressing on the UK Fontana label. Vinyl plays VG+.
