Label Conditions: Both in super conditions: very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces tiny and faint, hardly at all in fact. This one of the very best albums I have seen or heard on this label.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A very good solid weight for any record.

Rarity: Scarce: first issues are considerably harder to find, especially so in such lovely condition, this record plays beautifully.

Brief Info: Flash were a progressive rock act founded by Peter Bank, formerly of Yes, so the similarity of their sound is no accident. This was their second album and now minus the services of Peter Kaye on keyboards. In my opinion not quite as good as the debut but still a very worthwhile set nonetheless. For me also, this is the hardest one to find and this original is a beauty. The record looks hardly played and sounds superb, the very wear-prone cover also has little, but the spine appears faded. As seen further up, a very early pre-EMI label copy even with the prized 1G ultimate first issue mother and stamp on side two. This a copy to please most fans and prog-rock collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Cover Front: Superb with very little to fault and by a mild, the best I have seen. A very fine and faint press mark under the title if scrutinised under angled light. The lack of rubbing and creasing major positives.

Cover Back: The odd faint surface crease and minor mark, but again exceptional for this one that is so prone to ring wear, of which this has barely even a trace. A faint gripper mark in manufacture is seen faintly both sides in perfect alignment, that purely a natural trait of the production process – how many would even mention it?

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is practically Mint as made, little to add really except, so few are these days.

Top Edges: Both straight and neat with hardly any hint or wear at all.

Bottom Edges: Mainly light rubbing on the back dark edge, more moderate towards the far right, but this area only quite small. The front show little again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: In terms of wear, little at all as such, but likely faded by natural light as many covers like this will be if stored in racks with the spines exposed. Solid, straight with barely any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel - this always worthy of note as it makes gatefold covers appear much neater. A tiny rub to the ‘L’ in ‘FLASH’, but all other letters present and barely worn, even if faded a little.

Corners: Most of any tip rubs are very small and light, just one moderate on the bottom back right. All retain very fine and mostly excellent (or better) shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this clearly wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors (if the faded spine is not an issue).

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): an exceptional for a genuine 43+-year-old white inner sleeve. A little gentle discolouration to remind of that fact, but two very neat window circles and the polylining very clear. Hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs needed.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–). a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy that appears hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks minuscule even viewed critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality prog-rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
