Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 107 grams. Quite light, but plays superbly.

Rarity: Moderately scarce and very difficult to find in top conditions, this was not a big seller.

Brief Info: ‘Mystery to Me’ was the eighth Fleetwood Mac album and was the last album to feature Bob Weston. Most of the songs were written by guitarist/singer Bob Welch and keyboardist/singer Christine McVie. Less bluesy than before with a more commercial sound that eventually paved the way for their massive success from the mid-70s onwards. This album has no hit singles and sold very modestly, especially in the UK. It does include ‘For Your Love’, a non-charting single backed with the excellent ‘Hypnotised’ which was originally recorded by The Yardbirds. Although prolific at this time, albums sales were pretty disappointing and even the spectacular unmissable cover artwork on this title helped little. This cover is a genuine work of art and rarely will it ever be found better. The album has beautiful clean sound and without doubt, has hardly been played. Anything that includes the wonderful Christine McVie, is worthy of attention and musically, this album is unlikely to disappoint.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): and rarely seen it better. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Gothic.

Cover Front: Simply stunning and this does come close to reminding of new. The odd hint of a corner tip crease but little else, a real beauty.

Cover Back: Similar again: the odd rim trace seen under light but few marks or creases.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Practically as made with fantastic band artwork.

Top Edges: Superbly straight and unworn.

Bottom Edges: Practically the same, any rub traces on these storage edges ultra faint and light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear and both guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on the back edge, the front being closed.

Spine and Text: A very impressive spine with barely any wear again. Very solid and thick, straight and uncompressed. Folded slightly off-square so the back bottom edge drops a little, this being almost the same as one I sold around three years ago, so this seem a fairly common trait of this sleeve, this proven by the perfectly unworn text raising slightly from left to right (seen on my close-up pictures). Both the vulnerable folds are totally unworn or scuffed.

Corners: All corners are in super shape with any traces of wear tiny and faint with just the odd minor tip crease.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this obviously wear-prone 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This unmissable and attractive item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined inner that has aged a little with some modest darkening mostly around the edges. Barely any creases and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a very impressive visual copy that is very clean with strong shine, intense black and quite solidly pressed. Vinyl was generally thinner in this difficult oil crisis period and few titles at this time were heavy pressed. Evidence suggest a record hardly played reitterated by very impressive clean sound. Any surfaces traces are few and ultra fine and faint as seen with the closest scrutiny under bright angled light. Visually a lovely record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautifully clean record plays up to it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is a very clean pressing for a fairly gentle Fleetwood Mac album. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this somewhat overlooked record. It’s not seen that often and rarely without a cover badly rubbed, grubby or with significant ringwear. This copy could will very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
