FLIPPER Gone Fishin 1984 OG 1st Press SUB42 Sacrifice Will Shatter DK MDC NM

Flipper's second studio album, released in 1984 on Subterranean Records. Where their debut Generic hit like a wrecking ball, Gone Fishin' pulled the wreckage into something stranger and more deliberate — slower, weirder, more textured. The band incorporated piano, clavinet, brass, bongos, a Roland Space Drum, and battlefield audio samples without losing any of the confrontational weight that defined them. Bruce Loose and Will Shatter shared bass and vocal duties throughout, pushing the album between corrosive noise and something close to melody.

The eight tracks split across Comin' and Goin' sides. "Survivors of the Plague" and "Sacrifice" — later covered by the Melvins on Lysol — are the heaviest moments. "In Life My Friends" and "First the Heart" show the band at their most melodically unsettling. "Talk's Cheap" and "You Nought Me" are Will Shatter at his most direct. The album was recorded and mixed at Hyde Street Studios, San Francisco, produced by the band with Garry Creiman engineering.

Will Shatter died in December 1987. This is one of two studio albums recorded with the original lineup.

This is an original US first pressing on Subterranean Records (SUB 42). First pressing identification: no band name or title printed on the front sleeve — the cover is the cutout truck artwork only, with assembly instructions. Later pressings added the band name and title in yellow on the front. The inner sleeve is printed on heavy board stock, correct for the first pressing. Later pressings used standard gloss paper stock.

Mastered at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, by George Horn. Horn served as Chief Engineer at Fantasy Studios from 1980 and accumulated nearly 2,000 mastering credits over his career — Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Dead Kennedys, Santana, and hundreds more. This is his lacquer.

The picture labels are correct for the original pressing — Side A shows the front of the painted Flipper van with the "Gone Fishin'" sign in the windshield; Side B shows the graffiti-covered rear of the same van with the California license plate.

Deadwax is hand etched. Side A carries L-16297; Side B carries L-16298-X. The -X designation on Side B indicates an alternate lacquer cut at Fantasy Studios — Side A and Side B are not from the same cutting sequence, an asymmetry present on this specific copy.

The original Subterranean Records catalog insert is present — August 1984, listing releases through SUB 44, with Gone Fishin' listed as a new release at $6.50. This is the earliest possible insert for this record, issued concurrent with the album's release.
