Description
GREAT GARY USHER production on this obscure single – the Forte Four, “Can’t You See I’m Trying” b/w “Don’t Let the Sun Shine on Me”, from 1966 on the Decca label. Whoever the Forte Four were, they obviously had some clout, and access to the Knickerbockers’ master tapes, because the A-side was cut as a demo by the Knicks and never officially released until the early 90’s Sundazed comp! It’s a GREAT strummin’ slice of summery harmony pop, as you’d expect, with an insanely catchy chorus and some very trippy backwards saxophone effects (also on the Knickerbockers demo!). And written by Glen Campbell and Jerry Fuller too. Now that’s some pedigree! Flipside’s equally great, AGAIN with a Knickerbockers connection – “Don’t Let the Sun Shine on Me” was penned by Annette Tucker and Keith Colley, who also wrote the Knicks “High on Love”. This one’s great jangly Byrds pop with a galloping rhythm and lots of swirling organ. This time, the Forte Four sing EVERY line in group harmony, and despite the galloping, upbeat happy-go-lucky melody, there’s some pretty black despair in them lyrics: “Darkness hide my misery, I don’t want nobody to see, so don’t let the sun shine on me.” Too bad the writers of “I Hate Myself and Want to Die – the 52 Most Depressing Songs You’ve Ever Heard” didn’t dig a little deeper. Then again, if you didn’t listen to the words, you’d have NO idea these guys were more ennui-ridden than Ian Curtis – on the surface, this is the very epitome of bouncy, catchy, summertime pop – and with Gary Usher at the helm, it’s never sounded better. Original 1966 pressing on the Decca label. Vinyl plays VG+.
