GREAT teen pop band from the Big Apple took an odd Greek motif for their look, although anyone looking for some ancient lyre solos are bound to be a little disappointed. There IS a nifty Middle Eastern sitar break in "Monologue," however, and that's kinda Greek-ish I guess. And maybe the way the drummer bashes the heck out of the cymbals kinda harkens back to the way Hephaestus used to bash his blacksmith hammer against anvil. Or maybe I'm just reachin' here. Either way, the Forum Quorum give you TWO full sides - a veritable Greek FEAST - of good solid garage pop tunes on their gettin' scarce album, including an admirable white-boy attempt at an early Parliament classic "(I Wanna) Testify," which really ain't as bad as you're thinking. Kinda like a looser, rawer Three Dog Night with Ray Manzarek sitting in. There is a LOT of organ on this album - the opening seconds of "Girl Make Up Your Mind" sound just like Vanilla Fudge's big hit "You Keep Me Hangin' On," and the simmering organ that percolates throughout the psychy "51st Thought" brings to mind some of the more ethereal late night acid psych moments of the Mandrake Memorial. Those looking for more of the "mindblowing" ilk should head directly to album closer "Synopsis," which opens with a "Jungle Boogie" gong before diving headfirst into a maelstrom of blistering garage punk guitar feedback and heart-racing 200 mph speedfreak tempos. Okay, so maybe Forum Quorum sound about as "Greek" as the Standells, but they got on the Mike Douglas show TWICE (back when the name Fanny Flagg actually MEANT something), and they recorded the theme song to the film MISSION:MARS (included on the album). And THAT makes 'em a heck of a lot cooler than Hephaestus.
