Released in 1968, The Sinatra Family Wish You a Merry Christmas is certainly a relic of its time. The cover photo alone -- picturing Frank with Nancy, Tina, and Frank Jr., all dressed in white -- is a sign of Sinatra's post-Rat Pack times, as is the music inside. Nelson Riddle seems to take Don Costa's slick, lush orchestrations as his cue for the arrangements, which rarely show the subtle grace and wit of his best work. That's not a slight to Costa, whose big orchestrations had their own charm, but it's a little unfair to go into The Sinatra Family expecting something similar to Sinatra's past glories with Riddle. Then again, the title of the record signals that this an album about personality, not music. On that level, it's pretty fun, although it's quite slight and really dated. Frank doesn't have a huge presence on the record, soloing on the two highlights, Jimmy Webb's "Whatever Happened to Christmas?" and Cahn/Styne's "The Christmas Waltz." Apart from "The Bells of Christmas," which is delivered fairly seriously, the family tracks are a lark, especially the conspicuously modern reworking of "The 12 Days of Christmas," where Daddy gets nine games of Scrabble. "I Wouldn't Trade Christmas" shares a similarly lighthearted, consciously hep tone, and it's the next best thing here. Frank Jr. apes his father a bit too enthusiastically on "Some Children See Him," while Nancy's two tracks are enjoyable but ephemeral, as are Tina's "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" and the daughters' duet "O Bambino." But so what? This wasn't meant to be substantial -- it was just a seasonal laugh for 1968. It probably was an enjoyable trifle then, and decades later, it's still an enjoyable trifle, made all the more fun because it is a pop culture artifact.

These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 100:1.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         The cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)

-        No split seams  (yet)

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels  (except for the promo timing strip)

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
