Label/Format: Reprise – a very first issue with the new tan design that replaced the tri-coloured steamboat format. This album was never issued on that label. These have the RSLP catalogue number as-seen, the surfaces are smooth and matt, the tan colour darker than later pressings.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any of the very few spindle marks mostly fine and light, these showing only modestly under light.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. An impressive weight for this album, repressings were much thinner and lighter.

Rarity: Scarce as a first issue, this one with the very first printed green cover. Then reprinted in a red cover, which personally I think is rarer with the RSLP catalogue number. The green covers however were not reprinted and only available for a relatively brief time (in vinyl terms). The red cover that replaced it continued, but most of these are seen with the new K-44020 catalogue number after the Kinney takeover of Reprise. So the red cover is seen far more often than the original green, but are reprints. Both versions are notoriously prone to all forms of wear, especially ring wear and never easy to find still looking attractive.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Zappa’s third ‘solo’ album after the controversial disbandment of the original Mothers of Invention. ‘Chunga’s Revenge’, with it’s famous ‘Yawning’ cover, introduced singers Flo and Eddie (ex-Turtles Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, a duo who later sang backing vocals for T Rex). Also featuring several players from the previous solo album – the masterpiece which was ‘Hot Rats’ from 1969 (also on offer amongst a host of others). This album, unfairly never one of his most acclaimed, but for me highly underrated, contains many gems and several classic instrumentals. The best being the title track which features Ian Underwood on electric sax that gets the full wah-wah treatment. The beautifully melodic and catchy jazzy track Twenty Small Cigars, actually an out-take from ‘Hot Rats’ and the glorious guitar-driven ‘Transylvania Boogie’ with it’s gypsy rhythms. ‘Road Ladies’ describes the pleasures (and consequences) from the groupies around at this time. A varied album and again never short of experimentation. Violin supremo, Sugarcane Harris, plays organ on the title track and Frank himself plays all the percussion on the Varese inspired piece ‘The Clap’. This a superb first issue in the relatively briefly available green cover. The heavy pressed record offers immaculate sound and appears hardly played.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: but actually looks even better. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces, clearly seen, the green original that was soon replaced with the red version. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press Ltd and includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: “A gypsy mutant industrial vacuum cleaner dances about a mysterious night time camp fire. Festoons. Dozens of imported castanets, clutched by the horrible suction of its heavy duty hose, waving with marginal erotic abandon in the midnight autumn air”.

So states the front of one of Frank’s most famous covers with the huge yawn taken by Phil Franks. Not intentionally taken to be used on an album cover, but when Zappa saw the picture, he liked it and decided to use it. Here seen in very impressive condition and devoid of the usual rubbing, creasing and grubbiness most seem to acquire. The main issue is some natural light fading of spine fold which this cover rarely seems to escape to some degree. But any other blemishes on this outstanding front are minimal, tiny and faint, this more than a match for own personal copy.

Cover Back: Along with Burnt Weeny Sandwich, probably the most ring wear prone Zappa cover. Finding the back with none is a massively difficult task, but as can be seen on the picture, this has barely even a trace. The colour remains very strong to the spine fold again, this has faded – or more accurately, changed due to light, there is a light rub near the top right with the faintest of faint traces of a sticker removal mark (no tear), and only just registering with very close inspection. There is a small sticker with the word ‘FONA’ near the top left, a sticker I have seen on this cover before. There is little else on this unforgiving back to fault and is rarely seen looking this nice or fresh.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both inner faces are almost as-made, any blemishes tiny, few and light, the Cal Schenkel artwork looks fantastic.

Top Edges: Both straight, flush with hardly any hint of wear, any rubbing very little, small and light.

Bottom Edges: Again straight and flush, the front edge with little to fault, the back edge has moderate rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening light as seen viewed end-on, this mainly on the inside back entrance edge that is a little proud of the back in manufacture. All are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Any rubbing to the spine surface is tiny and light, but again this has faded with natural exposure to light over the years. However all the black text is fully present, still strong and unworn as-seen, also nicely centred for good measure. Solid, quite thick, straight with no compression and folded square, so most edges meet up closely together and near parallel. Minus the fading, I would have graded this splendid cover still higher, and being honest, few of these cover avoid this somewhat natural trait.

Corners: Light to moderate corner tip rubs mainly to the edge areas rather than on the main surfaces. The front especially has hardly any. Very fine shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: Both green and red versions of this cover, no matter when they were printed, are very prone to light and few seem to escape some issues. In terms of wear, and especially lack of ring wear, this is still a highly attractive first issue example. One to hold and enjoy, it will not prove easy to find much better and should please many collectors.

Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain solid white unlined inner with little else to fault bar some natural discolour/ageing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): a fantastic visual example, just a super fine hairline with barely any surface traces, even as seen with scrutiny under bright light. Viewed in average room light, this simply reminds of as-made. Very clean with super shine and quite heavily pressed on high quality vinyl. Clearly little played and visually very impressive, one to please most-all collectors. Indeed this A1/B1 first pressing could prove a major upgrade for many fans and collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays up and beyond it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this top-quality original I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Few would have considered natural light issues when storing albums in racks many years ago. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
