I will never compromise on quality, safe packaging – I NEVER use mailing envelopes that offer virtually no protection at all, and records WILL arrive damaged in them at some time as most record buyers will already know. Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Label/Format: Reprise – a first issue with the new tan design that replaced the tri-coloured steamboat format. This album was never issued on that label. These have the RSLP catalogue number as-seen, the surfaces are matt with a gentle hint of texturing, the tan colour darker than later Kinney repressings.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any of the very few spindle marks mostly fine and light, these showing gently under light.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 157 grams. An impressive, way over average weight for this album, repressings were much thinner and lighter.

Rarity: Scarce as a first issue in better conditions especially. This album was initially issued in a green cover with the same artwork. It was then changed to red as seen in this copy just prior to the Kinney takeover – the records are exactly the same. I actually think the red version with the RSLP catalogue number is the rarer of the two. Yes, you do see more red ones around, but most are the Kinney repressings with the new catalogue number with fewer of the red RSLP ones made. It is unusual to see any cover so distinctly different including the same graphics and why is was changed, I do no know, it remains something of a mystery. Never easy finding either cover in better conditions, it being very prone to rubbing and especially ring wear on the back, this one, very unusually, has avoided any. The record itself plays great and appears only lightly used.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Frank Zappa’s third ‘solo’ album after the controversial disbandment of the original Mothers of Invention. ‘Chunga’s Revenge’, with it’s famous ‘Yawning’ cover, introduced singers Flo and Eddie (ex-Turtles Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, a duo who later sang backing vocals for T Rex and others). Also featuring several players from the previous solo album – the masterpiece which was ‘Hot Rats’ from 1969. This album, unfairly never one of his most acclaimed, but for me highly underrated, contains many gems and several classic instrumentals. The best being the title track which features Ian Underwood on electric sax that gets the full wah-wah treatment. The beautifully melodic and catchy jazzy track Twenty Small Cigars, actually an out-take from the ‘Hot Rats’ session, and the glorious guitar-driven ‘Transylvania Boogie’ with it’s gypsy rhythms. ‘Road Ladies’ was recorded live and describes the pleasures (and consequences) from the groupies around at this time. A varied album and again never short of experimentation. Violin supremo, Sugarcane Harris, plays organ on the title track and Frank himself plays all the percussion on the Varese inspired piece ‘The Clap’. This a lovely ‘first’ issue with arguably the rarer red RSLP cover in fine shape. The heavy pressed record offers quality sound and appears hardly played.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: but actually looks even better with the main surfaces impressive. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces, clearly seen, this is the scarce deep red variant that replaced the initial green version. This red version reprinted just prior to the Kinney takeover, hence few are seen with the original RSLP catalogue number. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press Ltd and includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: “A gypsy mutant industrial vacuum cleaner dances about a mysterious night time camp fire. Festoons. Dozens of imported castanets, clutched by the horrible suction of its heavy duty hose, waving with marginal erotic abandon in the midnight autumn air”.

So states the front of one of Frank’s most famous covers with the huge yawn taken by Phil Franks. Not intentionally taken to be used on an album cover, but when Zappa saw the picture, he liked it and decided to use it for this album. Here seen in very impressive condition and devoid of the usual rubbing most seem to acquire. The main issue is natural light fading of spine fold (and the actual spine itself which now appears white), proving just how fragile red ink is to light exposure. I own two copies of this album myself with the red cover, and one has lightly faded to a deep pink colour, the other still be full red (and those are now quite rare to find). But any other issues are mainly relatively mild creases on the spine edge, any marks few and fine seen under light. The main surface retains deep colour which is a deeper shade or red than later ones.

Cover Back: Along with Burnt Weeny Sandwich, probably the most ring wear prone cover in Zappa’s vast catalogue. This is one of the very best I have seen lacking the usual ring wear that blights most. The colour remains very strong to the spine fold again, this has faded a little. Any creasing to this side minimal, few and faint. The lack of rubbing or even rim impression is great news making this back little short of exceptional.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both inner faces are almost as-made with barely anything to fault, the Cal Schenkel artwork looks fantastic.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and quite close to parallel, any rubbing little, quite light and patchy near the left.

Bottom Edges: Again straight and flat, the front red edge with little to fault, the back edge has moderate, quite patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is close and machine cut in manufacture, this is still impressively sharp. Both opening back edges are close as well with just a little trace of thickening on the back.

Spine and Text: Actually unusual to see this spine looking white, unless this is a white variant I have not seen before (which I honestly doubt), this has faded impressively from red, and with the lower fold still showing red, I am sure it was initially the same colour as the cover front. Red ink simply is intolerant of sunlight and will fade fast if exposed. However, the black text is still fully present and strong. Still solid, quite thick, straight with minimal compression with only light to left. Minus the fading, I would have graded this splendid cover a little higher because the lack of wear to the main faces is impressive.

Corners: Any tip rubs mainly small and light with very fine shape retained without major knocks.

Cover Summary: Both green and red versions of this cover, no matter when they were printed, are very prone to light and few seem to escape some issues. In terms of wear, and especially lack of ring wear, this is still a highly attractive first issue example. One to hold and enjoy, it will not prove easy to find much better and should please many collectors.

Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined inner with little else to fault bar some moderate natural discolouration which as aged it a little. All edges solidly intact without repairs. This has the ‘patent no. 1,125,555,’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual example with any surface marks few, very fine, wispy and faint under bright light. No penetrating style scratches, viewed in average room light hardly any show. Very clean with fine shine and heavily pressed with way over average weight. Appearing little played and visually impressive, one to please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album which as gained far more respect over time, plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this top-quality original I feel sure – as stated, the cover is a second print, but the records were exactly the same. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally carefully handled. Few would have considered natural light issues when storing albums in racks many years ago, and both the green and red version suffer the same when exposed to sunlight. Nothing of note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
