ZAPPA - 'IN NEW YORK' LP
DISCREET RECORDS
THIS IS A COPY OF THE WITHDRAWN RECORD WITH 'PUNKY WHIPS' ON THE RECORD, LABEL AND SLEEVE.AND THE UNCENSORED VERSION OF 'TITTIES AND BEER'
SEE BELOW FOR DETAILS.
This is the first, and only, briefly UK issued version of this double set that includes the controversial track ‘Punky’s Whips’. This was withdrawn almost immediately and is very elusive indeed to find. Warner Bros got very worried about this song in case the man (Mr Punky Meadows of the US glam-rock band Angel, a long blonde-headed lead guitar player) sued Zappa for the sexual lyrics, suggesting Punky was gay. It was later said he was unoffended by the song and actually thought it all very amusing. Terry Bozio, the ‘cute little’ drummer in this Zappa band, falls in love with a picture of Punky and tells of his desires of what he would like to do with him - it’s all very bizarre and typical Frank humour. This album exists in three versions: this being the first cut that includes ‘Punky’s Whips’ on the cover, label and the record plays the song. The second version has the track on the cover but not on the label and does not play the song – clearly the already printed covers were to be used up to save money, but clearly the written lyrics were strangely not deemed a worry compared with the vocal version. The third, and most common issue omits the track everywhere. This ultimate withdrawn first pressing also includes the uncensored version of ‘Titties and Beer’ that opens the album. It has an extra line with reference to a picture of Meadows to be used for ‘self-pleasure’ (a cleaned up version here).
THE SLEEVE IS INTACT WITH NO FOLDS OR BENDS.IT DOES HAVE EDGE WEAR BUT THE SPINE IS LARGELY INTACT. THERE ARE RING WEAR MARKS ON THE FRONT AND REAR. THE INNER SLEEVES ARE CLEAN,STRAIGHT AND TIDY. THERE ARE HAIRLINES ON THE RECORD BUT THEY LOOK LIKE THE LINES CAUSED BY SLEEVE RUB RATHER THAN STYLUS ABUSE.
THERE ARE A FEW MARKS BEYOND THE HAIRLINES BUT THEY ARE ALSO LIGHT. THERE AREN'T ANY MARKS THAT SHOULD EFFECT PLAYBACK. SPINDLE HOLES ARE GENERALLY CLEAN WITH ONLY THE FAINTEST MARKS. NOT A MINT COPY BUT A VERY GOOD COPY OF A RARE WITHDRAWN ISSUE.
ALL RECORDS DISPATCHED IN MAILER WITH 2 STIFFENERS.
