Mothermania is a collection of previously released tunes culled from the first three Mothers of Invention albums. So why bother? Well, it's the only early collection actually compiled by FZ. Verve released a bunch of early compilations without permission, but more importantly, this is the only place you can hear some of these mixes and edits. Many of the tunes from Freak Out! appear in different mixes, while "It Can't Happen Here" plays through without the interruptions of the Freak Out! version. The We're Only in It for the Money tracks might be even more interesting. The backwards snippet that closes side one of the original WOIIFTM album was a censored verse from "Mother People," and Mothermania is the only place you can hear the original uncensored version of the song. The version of "Idiot Bastard Son" has an otherwise unheard instrumental introduction and a VERY different mix, and plays through without the edits and interruptions of the WOIIFTM version. Mothermania could hardly be called essential, but it does have some really interesting material that any hardcore fan of FZ's early years would want to hear.

(EXCERPT FROM AN SEAN WESTERGAARD, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

The only anthology by the first incarnation of the Mothers of Invention issued in it’s lifetime (1966-69) and by far still the greatest one. The album culls the tracks from the first three classic Zappa/Mothers Verve albums: Freak Out, Absolutely Free and We're in it only for the money. A positively critical  Mothers piece, much, much better than subsequent compilations, such as MGM's 1970  "Worst of the Mother*^$#(*& (which kinda lives up to its title).

Track listing: Brown shoes don't make it - Mother people - Duke of Prunes - Call any vegetable - The idiot bastard son - It can't happen here - You are probably wondering why I am here - Who are the brain police - Plastic people - Hungry freaks daddy - America drinks and goes home

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

·        CONDITION:

·        THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)           WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)           The record is  pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)            Yellow Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 100:1.

(d)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                                     THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-          Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4  (front side) and 3 (back side)

-          Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging. Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-          Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-          The cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there along the spine (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-          Small, faint water stain noted in one bottom corner (less than 1 square inch in size)

-          Cover has two corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
