My eyes almost popped out of my head when I came across this one. First of all, ANY copy of this 2LP set in great condition is a find. This record, many agree, was the opening cannon-shot of the mid-60s. And the first-ever double "rock" LP.
Imagine my delight when I noticed that it was a MONO pressing. Mono copies of "Freak Out" are ridiculously rare, especially in this kind of shape.
Then I took the records out and -- lo and behold -- it's a DJ copy. The first I've ever seen.
This took some research. The last one I can turn up as having sold, went at auction for just over $600 for a near-mint copy.
I'd love to call this one near-mint, but I'm going to grade it ruthlessly since it's such a rare artifact. The cover is VG+ -- it's in remarkable shape, with no spine-damage or creases, but it does have visible (though minor) ring-wear. The records are beautiful, and I would call them near-mint except there is a visible "scuff" on side 3. It's NOT a scratch, and you can't hear it. I don't usually play-grade LPs, but I was dying to hear this one anyway. Which brings us to the mix. The mono mix is RADICALLY different from the stereo mix you're used to! I could spend all day describing it, but, well, a word to the wise.
