MOTHERS OF INVENTION – Uncle Meat Test Pressing, Bizarre MS 2024

Here’s something we don’t see everyday. This is an original Test Pressing for the double LP Uncle Meat. This auction also includes an original first edition 1969 copy of the LP in the gatefold cover, with the book insert, to further your bragging rights.

The matrix numbers in the dead wax are the same for the regular LP and the Test Pressings except for side 4. The test pressing numbers for side 4 end in 1B, instead of 1D, indicating a different take or master. I listened to both sides but couldn’t detect the difference. It’s either subtle or not there. The track list and review information is at the bottom of this page.

CONDITION

Both Test Press discs play grade at Near Mint. No scratches, skips, pops, or crackle. They both have nice and glossy surfaces with just a few faint scuffs. The covers are plain with the names written on the front and some of the track names hand written on the back. Both covers are faded from age and have light soiling. No splits.

The production records look Near Mint. Actually, they look like they’ve never been played. The booklet is perfect and so are the original Bizarre custom inner sleeves. The gatefold cover has faint surface wear. The top seams are split. The spine and bottom edges are excellent.

EUROPE – The first LP is $14, then add $2.50 for each additional LP if packaged together.
ASIA – The first LP is $15, then add $3.00 for each additional LP if packaged together.
Surface mail to Europe and Asia is available for about half the price but it can take weeks to arrive and not recommended.

The soundtrack for a film that remained incomplete for over a decade, “Uncle Meat” is one of the finest albums produced by Zappa and the original Mothers of Invention. Showcasing every facet of the band, Uncle Meat is filled with quirky Zappa instrumentals like the title track and the "Dog Breath Variations," rock staples like "Cruisin' For Burgers" and "Mr. Green Genes," and an epic suite of instrumental fervor centered around the jazz-rock forerunner, "King Kong". --Andrew Boscardin

As a whole, UNCLE MEAT illustrates Zappa’s masterful production techniques, and his ability to appropriate all sorts of popular music and have his way with it as well. Doo-wop rears its head on "Cruisin' For Burgers" and "Electric Aunt Jemima;" and the groupies-turned recording artists the GTO's make their debut on "Our Bizarre Relationship." And of course, it wouldn't be a serious, jazz-influenced Mothers album without a little "Louie Louie."
