Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with deep tan colour. Any spindle traces tiny, few and faint, hardly anything really. A record that appears hardly played.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Still wheelchair-bound after his fall at The Rainbow Theatre, Zappa took his musicians into Paramount Studios. On the 17-minute ‘Big Swifty’, overdubbing allowed Zappa to turn a sextet into a virtual big band. Aynsley Dunbar’s drumming supplied perfect fluency, aided by Alex Dmochowski, his English bassist (playing under the name ‘Erroneous’). The closing theme was a Zappa guitar solo transcribed by trumpeter Sal Marquez and arranged for brass. Electric instrumental soloing over a rock beat invited comparisons to Miles Davis and John McLaughlin, but there is an ironical twist to the tunes that makes the music undeniably Zappaesque. George Duke’s splendid keyboards and Sal Marquez’s muted-trumpet also have a humorous quality. Whereas contemporary jazz rock was reaching out to the cosmos, Zappa kept everything low-key and amusing. “Your Mouth’ is a tale of psychotic male jealously (‘you might loose a bunch of teeth… my shot gun… just might want to blow you away’), but sung in a deceptively light style (and with a killer country slide-guitar solo by Tony Duran). ‘It Just might be a One-shot Deal’ describes someone hallucinating and advises them to dig it ‘while it’s happening’. Jeff Simmons, who had recorded a brilliant album of psychedelic balladry for Zappa’s Straight label – Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up, plays Hawaiian guitar. Although a commercial non-starter, this album is a great favourite among jazz and jazz-rock fans who are open-minded enough to give Zappa a listen. This more than merits it’s ‘Hot Rats II’ status and the two long instruments are superb. It paved the way for the even bigger Grand Wazoo project that followed, and this era of heavy jazz-rock and solo workouts is one of my favourite Zappa periods. ‘Waja/Jawaka’ is probably still one of Zappa’s most under-appreciated works, and that should never be. It had some blistering solos by Marquez, Don Preston on Moog and, of course, Zappa himself. Dunbar’s drumming is fantastic throughout and with his time in the band, rarely sounded better. The title song especially is magnificent and performs a magnificent prelude to ‘The Grand Wazoo’, still one of my favourite Zappa albums. This a lovely original with a clean cover and lovely clean sound.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made by MacNeill Press. Includes the original plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Fresh, clean and attractive and hardly aged. A tiny light crease to the top right corner tip being the most ‘significant’ blemish on the front which retains deep colour and hardly any other creases apart. The lack of ring wear, rubbing and sticker issues are all major pluses on a cover that often fails to wear well.

Cover Back: The same tiny tip crease with any rub traces gentle and very light as seen under light. A back that seldom escape often heavy ring wear which this has avoided. An impressive looking back as-seen.

Top Edge: Straight, clean and barely rubbed at all up to the very right tip.

Bottom Edge: Both ends have very small rubs with only one fine rub mark inbetween, the rest has little at all. This storage edge again has fared well with most seen often with heavy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with any thickening little, very patchy and light. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A very impressive clean spine. Solid, straight with barely any compression. The text is unworn and nicely centred as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs on the left tips tiny and light. A tiny light dink on the top right and a slightly larger rub on the bottom right tip. Excellent or better shape retained on three, the other still fine.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: just mildly darkened with age. A plain white unlined inner with two crisp window circles, hardly creased with all seam edges naturally intact. This has the ‘PATENT NO. 1,125,555’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: side one has a few mild surface marks that do nothing, side two has minimal visual blemishes at all. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with few plays on all the evidence. No penetrating stylus scratches and the record plays impressively with hardly anything to fault. Visually a fine looking record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb predominately instrumental album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
