"Recorded in 1960, Freddie Hubbard's Open Sesame ... dramatizes history in the making. The trumpeter was not unknown then, but he was still in his early years; so was pianist McCoy Tyner, for whom a momentous association with John Coltrane was just around the corner. Indeed, the best-known musician at the time of this recording was bassist Sam Jones, and while he went on to bigger things with Cannonball Adderley and then Oscar Peterson, it was Hubbard and Tyner who would emerge as unambiguously major figures. That by rights should also have characterized tenorist Tina Brooks, but this superb player (his work on "But Beautiful" here is exquisite) never got the recognition he deserved, dying almost forgotten in 1974 at the age of 42. Further highlights include the leader's "Hub's Nub" and the two takes apiece of the title track and "Gypsy Blue," both excellent compositions by Brooks. Mention should also be made of drummer Clifford Jarvis, a young lion steeped in Blakey, and Rudy Van Gelder's predictably flawless engineering. Cover: Very Good+ ; the corners have minor wear and the back cover has very light ringwear; the front cover artwork is Near Mint- (you can see the shine off the high gloss in the photo)

Vinyl: Very Good+ to Very Good++ (side 2 label has some bubbling)

Mojo's Record Grading Standards
Mojo Books & Music uses Goldmine standards for the VISUAL GRADING of records.  The following is a short synopsis of each grade:

Mint (M): Absolutely perfect – never played (Like many record dealers, we do not use this grade, though it may be presumed for a sealed record.)

Near Mint / Mint- (NM or M-): nearly perfect; no obvious signs of wear

Very Good++ (VG++): Better than VG+, but not quite near mint due to a very minor flaw.

Very Good+ (VG+):; some signs that it was played by a previous owner who took good care of it; slight wear should not affect listening experience; jacket may have slight signs of wear or a cut-out hole.  VG+ = Excellent.  All but the most “mint crazy” collectors find this acceptable.

Very Good (VG): surface noise present but not overpowering; groove wear noticeable; light scratches; labels may be somewhat marred

Good (G), Good+ (G+): plays through without skipping but with significant surface noise, scratches, and visible groove wear; jacket has seam splits or other defects
