Description
Here is a rare copy of the classic Freddy King Goes Surfin lp, the much sought after killer instrumental blues/r&b album from one of the greatest blues artists of all time. It was released in America on the King label in 1963 (cat#: King 856), in an attempt to cash in on the surfing/surf music craze that was sweeping the nation in the early 60's. In actual fact, it is a reissue of Freddy's first instrumental lp called "Lets Hide Away and Dnace Away", with overdubbed crowd noises and a cool surf cover. Although its an album of guitar instrumentals, and some of the songs touch on the surf sound, its essentially a blues/r&b album. Either way, the album is an alltime classic, with ZZ top guitarist Billy Gibbons including it in his list of the 10 best blues albums of all time. Songs such as San-Ho-Zay and Hieaway have become blues standards and have been covered ny many artists. This album has been recently reissued by the Sundazed label, but the copy for sale is an original 60's, first pressing, black label, mono copy. Highly sought after but rarely found, it was never released in Australia and is almost impossible to find here!
I would rate the cover at a conservative (VG-). Minor shelf and rigwear, to front and back. Moderate edgewear to top and bottom seams., bottom seam split split halfway from opening edge. Top seam has a 7cm centre split. Minor wear to spine and opening edges. Minor corner wear. 3 tape residue marks on bottom of back. No writing/sticker/sticker residue/warping/watermarks/major creases. overall a very presentable cover...would have rated it higher if not for the seam splits.
Vinyl is (VG-). Clean, retains some original gloss, but has lots of light surface marks. Plays through with light background noise and ticks, with the occasional louder pop. No skips/sticking detected when i played it on my turntable. Still a good listening copy!
A side label is (VG-), has some writing in black texta, and light spindle marks. B side is (VG+), with only light spindle marks.
All in all, a good playing copy or great display copy....a must have for any blues fan or collector of surfing memorabilia!
