Freedomland was going to be the biggest amusement park in the northeast, a rival to Disney, when it opened in 1960. And yes, it was laid out like a map of the USA, just as the front cover shows.
So Mitch Miller, head of A&R for Columbia Records, got this recording together. Jule Styne was a Broadway composer, hot off Gypsy; George Weiss was a Broadway lyricist, maybe not as good as Styne, but he had written two Broadway shows and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”
Johnny Horton, off “The Battle of New Orleans”, was as hot as he was ever going to be, and is top-billed for his one number. Earl Wrightson was a solid Broadway baritone. Jimmy Rushing, “Mr. Five by Five,” was a classic blues singer. Cliff Arquette’s Charlie Weaver character was popular on TV. Jill Corey (who would later marry Don Hoak of the Pittsburgh Pirates) and Richard Hayes (who would later host “Name That Tune”) fill out the bill.
Freedomland was a bust, closing after the 1964 season. Co-op City was built in the Bronx on its site. But this album remains. I have no idea if any of these songs were ever sung at the park…
