Owned by me since purchase in 1972.
The album includes the lyric/art/credits insert together with the original Decca mono inner sleeve. The LP has red labels and a peep-hole on the back of the outer sleeve where the red of the inner sleeve is visible, indicating ‘mono’.
It is likely that no more than 200 copies of this version were ever sold making this album extremely rare.
The record has been checked out by an expert who has provided the following information:
Grading
This is not a mint specimen but its scarcity value makes it more sought after than very many mint rarities. It plays through fully without skips of jumps (see notes below).
Vinyl Side 1 – see photo - Surface still retains its sheen. There are a few light marks from sleeve removal and replacement and a couple of very light scuffs. Overall I would grade this side as VG+ according to 'Record Collector' guidelines.
Vinyl Side 2 – see photo - A slightly more prominent mark on track one; otherwise there are fewer surface marks than on side 1. Again, I would grade it as VG+ according to 'Record Collector' guidelines.
Some may have graded the vinyl as EX- but I prefer to undergrade to avoid disappointment.
Labels - see photos - The labels display light spindle marks but are overall in excellent condition.
Turntable Audition - I have played the album right through twice and there are no skips or jumps. There is some ‘crackle’ at the start of each side but this diminishes as the record progresses. There are also one or two small pops but nothing that spoils your enjoyment of this interesting album. The vinyl would perhaps benefit from a professional clean and this would probably remove the crackles mentioned above. Remember, the album is more 40 years old and it is in truly fantastic condition for its age.
Condition of Record Sleeve – see photos - The cover is laminated with ‘Clarifoil’ made by British Celanese Ltd and printed in England by Robert Stace. Copyright is 1969, the Decca Record Company Limited, London. The rear cover has a small circular ‘peephole’ which displays the colour of the inner sleeve; here it is red of course. There are no rips or tears and no knifing. The front has some ‘dents’, slight 'lifts' in the laminate and scratches (visible in the photographs) and there is some ring wear. There is also some edge scuffing mostly to the 'open' end, the record having been stored in a poly sleeve. The rear of the cover has fewer marks but more apparent ring wear. The Peephole is completely intact and without damage.
Condition of Inner Sleeve – see photos - It comes with the original red Decca mono inner poly lined bag which displays the word ‘Mono’ around the edges. The colour is a little bit faded but there are no rips or tear and again, no knifing.
Condition of Lyric Insert – see photos - In very good condition apart from a small 3cm tear in one corner and a 1cm tear in the opposite corner (just visible in the photographs). No other issues except the paper does show signs of age (slight yellowing in some areas).
The story of this copy:
I was browsing in Woolworths in a suburb of Cardiff in 1972 when I was 13. I had recently been introduced to prog rock and Genesis. I found this in a pile of weird stuff. I had no idea if this album was by the band, Genesis, or not. The cover was already a little ring-marked – the album was sealed so it must have been sitting there since 1969. I bought it on the off chance – it cost £0.75. I played it a lot when I first had it but rarely after that. It has travelled around with me through nine house moves. As I was unaware of its rarity, it was just kept with a bunch of other LPs. It’s time for it to find a new home now, with someone who will appreciate it.
