Brighton band Fujiya and Miyagi have always been a unique proposition - an outfit whose distinctive sound draws deeply on their love of both Krautrock and Italo-disco. While this was a startling signature sound when they first emerged in the early 2000s - unfairly being lumped in with the electroclash wave - it's perhaps a little less unusual now. Even so, they remain an enticing proposition, as Shiny New Object, their first album in four years and ninth studio set in total, defiantly proves. More rooted in NYC punk-funk and post-punk mutant disco than some of their previous sets, it's a vital, effortlessly funky and deliciously low-slung affair that grafts wide-eyed lead vocals and effects-laden instrumentation to seriously weighty, forthright grooves.
