George Clinton and his Funkadelic company caused many a posterior to pump with Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow, their second album, first released in 1970 only months after the debut, and only the second record after that one to make them an a priori name. Where the first LP still carried traces of structured soul and psychedelic rock, this one unpowers the screws totally: ten minutes of mantra and guitar delirium on the title track, Eddie Hazel's fuzzed-off leads and Bernie Worrell's keys, while Clinton preaches liberation over a tape mix sounding precariously on the edge of collapse. Else 'Funky Dollar Bill' and 'I Wanna Know If It's Good To You' keep one foot in funk while the band wander into stranger territory around them. Long overshadowed by the following year's Maggot Brain, the record has aged into one of the rawest documents of early P-Funk experimentation.
