Fela's earlier work is generally considered more on the rough side and not as immediate as his later efforts. This is not the case for Open & Close which will keep you entranced from the get go. The musicianship is stellar as always, although there are a few moments when things get a little out of hand, and Mr. Kuti delivers as if his life depended on it. Tony Allen's work is visible as well and the horn sections will make you bob your head in no time.

GRADING: MINT or M: It has to be 99% perfect to get this. I rarely give this out to anything other than a sealed record.

NEAR MINT or NM: Vinyl: appears virtually flawless. Only very minor scuffs and little else appear, which will play with no noise. Cover: looks as close to perfect with only minor signs of wear and or age, such as very very faint ring impression, but no ringwear.

EXCELLENT or EX: Vinyl: minor scuffs which are only slightly visible and no scratches, vinyl has great luster. Cover:  Artwork is still as close to perfect as can be. Some minor outer ring impression, very very very faint ringwear. Some slight creases to the corners, but not wrinkled and obtrusive to the eye. The corners can show white (where the artwork pasted slick was) meaning, slight wear. No seam splits, taped repairs  or writing on the cover.

VERY GOOD PLUS or VG+: Vinyl: shows wear, surface scuffs. The vinyl still has a great luster, but the flaws will be noticeable to the naked eye. A very very few random clicks or faint surface noise - almost always limited to between tracks - that are so faint or infrequent that they are nearly imperceptible and should not interfere with the enjoyment of the musical experience. Cover:  A virtually clean cover, the artwork looks clean with slightly more aging. There may be small writing on it. The back of the cover may be somewhat yellow. Some minor wear to the seams or spine, but no tears or holes popping through. The corners will be slightly dog eared yet no crackly bends, defacing the artwork. 

VERY GOOD or VG: Vinyl: It will visually present as having have been played and having lost some of its luster. There will be some surface noise when it is played, maybe some faint high end burn but dynamics should still overpower the surface noise and sound good. This is a record that is good enough. Cover:  will look worn, used. There may be some seam splitting with some scotch tape repair. There will be some ring wear, where the ink has begun to wear off. There may be some minor writing on the cover. It will look aged and possibly yellowish, but no stains or mildew from water damage. 

GOOD or G: Vinyl: will look very well played, dull, grayish and possibly abused, but will still play without skips caused by deep scratches. It will have distracting surface noise, such as continuous hiss, crackling or popping. Will also have significant high end burn and some loss of dynamics caused from grooves being worn. Good means that it will play OK even though you can still hear noise caused from the wear.  Cover:  will have major seam splits that are taped repaired. May have large writing on the cover. This is a record you buy and hold until a better one comes along.
