The Five Keys was an American rhythm and blues vocal group that was instrumental in shaping this genre in the 1950s.
It was formed with the original name of Sentimental Four in Newport News, Virginia, US, in the late 1940s, and initially consisted of two sets of brothers - Rudy and Bernie West, and Ripley and Raphael Ingram. The Ingrams left in 1949 and Maryland Pierce and Dickie Threat became members in his place. At this juncture the name of the group was changed to The Five Keys.
They were signed to Aladdin Records in 1951. "Ling, Ting, Tong," was a No. 28 pop hit in 1954. That was followed by the ballad "Out of Sight, Out of Mind," which reached No. 23 in 1956, and "Wisdom of a Fool," which hit No. 35 in 1957. But the group's influence was greater than the best-sellers would indicate.
Before black groups started crossing over onto pop charts, The Five Keys had a powerful effect on R&B music - especially among vocal harmony acts. "One of the most popular, influential and beautiful-sounding R&B singing groups of the 1950s, The Five Keys were not only a link between the gospel/pop units of the '40s and the later R&B and rock groups, they led by example, having hits in R&B, rock 'n' roll, and pop before the decade was through.
In 1952 Rudy West left to join the United States Army, and he was replaced by Ulysses K. Hicks. When Hicks died of a heart attack in Boston in 1955, Rudy West returned to the group. In 1954 Dickie Smith left and was replaced with Ramon Loper. At this point the Five Keys was signed to Capitol Records, and their popularity increased, although more instrumentation was used.
When this, the groups third album, was released by Capitol Records in 1957, the cover caused quite an unexpected controversy: Rudy West (far left) had his right thumb just barely visible on the record jacket, which some people mistook as an offending body part protruding from his waistline. As a result, second pressings airbrush out the offensive digit.
The group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002.
