Four Tops - Soul Spin UK 1969 LP Tamla Motown Records Catalogue Number STML 11138

For Soul Spin, producer Frank Wilson stirred nearly everything into the pot, directing the Four Tops to darker, topical material like the paternity case "Barbara's Boy" and "Lost in a Pool of Red," but also including two Burt Bacharach covers and Motown's take on the Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'." Elsewhere, the Beatles cover "Got to Get You Into My Life" has a dated chart but a tearing Levi Stubbs lead to save it, and "Light My Fire" is a startling success, with a slow-burn feel and great group vocals on the chorus.
