Frank Zappa 1st Press US LP Lumpy Gravy VG+ '68 Verve V6-8741 Experimental Rock
Original 1st Press US LP released in 1968 on the Black and silver large T Verve Records Label. Cat: V6-8741. Comes in heavy weight gatefold sleeve. Matrix numbers: V6-8741 SIDE-1 MGS-1068-1 14 (Block-shaped S)/ V6-8741 SIDE-2 MGS-1069-1 11 (Block-shaped S).
Uncovered in the out back of N.S.W. this record is part of a recent collection stored and unplayed for the last 20 years. Collected during the 90's and mostly sourced from overseas kept in a cool dry cellar there are some tasty gems on offer and we look forward on listing them over the next few months.
Lumpy Gravy, Frank Zappa's first solo album, was released months before the Mothers of Invention's third LP (even though its back cover asked the question: "Is this phase two of We're Only in It for the Money?") and both were conceptualized and recorded at the same time. We're Only in It for the Money became a song-oriented anti-flower power album with one contemporary/musique concrète/sound collage hybrid piece by way of conclusion. Lumpy Gravy collaged bits of orchestral music, sonic manipulations, spoken words, and occasional pop ditties into two lumps of 16 minutes each. This album presents Zappa's first recordings with a decent orchestra, the 50-piece Abnuceals Emuukha Electric Symphony Orchestra. His symphonic writing was very much influenced by Stravinsky and Varèse. It still had to lose its sharp edges and find the lushness found in 200 Motels. The segments of music are loosely tied together by bits of dialogue from inside the piano. MOI members and friends were invited to talk with their head inside a grand piano with the sustain pedal depressed (the technique was immortalized in the song "Evelyn, A Modified Dog"). The reverberating space gave the voices an eerie quality, but made it very difficult to convincingly edit the material.

There are some light spindle marks on labels. Record has some light scuff marks and very light scratches that cause some light crackles in parts and is in VG+ condition. Heavy weight gatefold sleeve has some ring wear, light marks and a seam split on bottom centre edge and is in VG+ condition.
Wrapping method: All records are sent in stiff cardboard mailers then wrapped in brown paper and sealed around edges with brown packaging tape. Records are taken out of sleeve to avoid seam splits and ring wear.
