Description
This is a COMPLETE SET of the Franklin Mint Record Society's 100 Greatest Recordings of all time. The records are in exceptionally good condition. I have found no scratches after looking through all of the records through their cases and they look unplayed. I have not played any records and they are kept for display in a smoke-free home. It was also believed by the previous seller than none have been played. The greats from Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, French and Russian masterpieces, Copland and Bernstein are just some of the works included in this set.
This set is slightly different from some other sets listed on eBay in that records are not stored in dust jackets. All 100 records are contained within an encasement (see photos 6 and 7) which means that have been effectively sealed this whole time. There is a multipage booklet, bound to the cover, providing details about each recording and the artist. There are also a few extra inserts with additional details that you will find included with some of the recordings throughout the collection. Photo 4 shows the Cross Reference Index guides which were sent with recordings 23/24, 49/50, 73/74 and 99/100. All but three (1/2, 3/4 and 9/10), still have the Franklin Mint Subscription letter from then director Stanley Walker with his brief commentary on the recordings. The copyright dates start at 1978 and progress to 1982 by 99/100.
The condition description has a detailed listing of every nick and ding I could find on the album cases. I want you to be confident that you know what you are buying. I would classify the noted issues as minor to very minor. I wish I could upload more than 12 photos just to show how minor the issues noted are and what great shape the set is in despite being over 40 years old. The majority of album covers have no issues to note. The cover for album 17/18 is the ONLY one that has a tear and is shown in photo 10. This is the worst issue on the whole set. I would say the second worst issue is the ding to the spine of the cover of album 91/92 shown in photo 11. A few album covers have superficial scratches that aren't always visible depending on the light and angle. Photo 12 is representative of what those scratches look like. I haven't attempted to see if those scratches would clean up if using the proper materials.
The booklets are all still firmly bound to the cover, and I have not found any rips or markings. There is some discoloring to the corners of the paper on the part which has the most exposure to air. Most of the discoloring is on the first and last pages of the booklet along with the edges of the paper. See photos 6 & 7 for a representation of the discoloring. I noted two albums have some 'grubiness' on the inside of cover (89/90 & 97/98). I believe this might be from the glue that was used as it mostly appears near a glued seam. However, there is no separation of anything at the seams. The glue is not on the records or the papers. A lot of it came off just by rubbing with a soft cloth and I suspect what remains can be removed with proper cleaning.
The album cases are 13.5 in. x 13.5 in. and 1 inch thick. These are a little bigger than a standard album cover. It looks like each one weighs over 3 pounds. The USPS Media Mail shipping rate is estimated at $150-160 and is the most cost-effective way I can find to ship the collection. (If you know of a cheaper way that is still reasonable, I am open to using it.) I am expecting everything to ship in 4 boxes, each of which will weigh around 40 lbs. **Please note, I had to add a handling fee in order reflect the correct shipping cost because eBay isn't set up to handle multi-box media mail shipping. If you are being charged much higher than $160 and the shipping cost comes in lower, I will refund the difference.**
Free local pickup WITHOUT any handling fee is also available. The pickup is at a secure location where you will have time to look over the records. Please let me know if you are able to pickup the records and it is trying to charge you a handling fee.
