The Symphony No. 9 in C major, D. 944, known as the Great, is the final symphony completed by Franz Schubert. Nicknamed The Great C major originally to distinguish it from his Symphony No. 6, the Little C major, the subtitle is usually now taken as a reference to the symphony's majesty. A typical performance takes around 55 minutes.

Often considered Schubert’s finest piece for orchestra, the Great C-Major Symphony is also one of the composer’s most innovative pieces. Thematic development in the style of Beethoven is still present in the work, but Schubert puts far more emphasis on melody, which one might expect from the composer of some six hundred lieder. In fact, this new style prompted Schumann to pursue his own symphonic ambitions. The symphony is scored for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in A and C, 2 bassoons, 2 horns in C, 2 trumpets in A and C, 3 trombones, timpani, and strings. Beethoven had always used the trombone as an effect, and therefore very sparingly, or, in the case of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, also to double the alto, tenor, and bass parts of the chorus as was common in sacred music and opera at the time. However, in both Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony and the Ninth Symphony, trombones are liberated from these roles and have far more substantial parts. This version was conducted by Thomas Schipper and performed by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in 1976.

Domestic (Excluding Hawaii and Alaska): If the Standard shipping option is chosen during checkout your order will be sent out via USPS Media Mail with no tracking or insurance. Please be aware that you choose this option at your own risk! Orders placed using the Expedited shipping option will be sent out via FedEx with online tracking and insurance. Tracking numbers will be sent at the winning buyers request.

Canada: Standard shipping for Canada is FedEx. Charges for all shipping methods are based on actual weight. Orders from Alaska and Hawaii will be based on actual weight.

Overseas: For packages lighter than five pounds, Airmail will be least expensive. Otherwise, we recommend FedEx as it is faster and safer than Airmail, and we are able to track your package through FedEx. We will ship through the United States Postal Service at your request. Please understand that shipping overseas through USPS can take up to four weeks. Also, we cannot track orders through USPS, and in the event that an order is lost, we cannot start a claim for 75 days with an additional four weeks for processing.

We will ship according to your preference, but if you do not specify a shipping method, we will choose the method we feel is best as outlined in the above paragraph.
