Description

🎶 Free – Tons Of Sobs

🏷️ Island Records · 🇬🇧 UK · 📀 LP · 🎛️ Porky / Pecko Cut · 📅 1971

📖 Release Context

Tons Of Sobs is the raw and uncompromising debut album from Free, recorded when the band were still teenagers. Released in 1971 on Island Records, it captures Paul Rodgers’ early vocal power and Paul Kossoff’s deeply expressive guitar work before the band refined their sound into later, more polished releases.

🎧 Listening Character

Gritty, blues-driven, and unvarnished, the album leans heavily into extended grooves and loose, live-in-the-room performances. Tracks like “Going Down Slow” and “Walk In My Shadow” showcase the band’s debt to American blues while firmly rooting the sound in early-70s British rock.

🎨 Artwork & Packaging

Issued in a gatefold sleeve featuring moody, experimental photography, the packaging reflects the album’s dark, introspective tone. Original UK Island palm-tree labels and Porky / Pecko mastering complete a desirable early pressing package.

📀 Condition (Visual Grading)

Vinyl: Visually grades VG. Light surface marks and hairlines visible under strong light; no deep scratches observed.
Sleeve: Visually grades VG. General edge wear, corner rubbing and age-related toning consistent with a 1971 gatefold sleeve. Structurally sound with no major splits.
Playback has not been tested; grading is visual only.

📦 Dispatch

Items are normally dispatched the next working day. Weekend orders dispatch Monday (excluding Bank Holidays). Record removed from sleeve and packed securely in a proper record mailer.

Collector’s Note:
A key early-70s British blues-rock album and an essential part of the Free catalogue. While later records brought commercial success, Tons Of Sobs remains prized for its honesty, raw energy, and Kossoff’s emotive playing. Original UK pressings with Porky / Pecko cuts continue to be sought after by collectors.
