The Frogwhompers are legendary in the Ohio University/Athens area, and that is where I saw them play in late 1977, when I drank a couple of beers and then bought this record.  I have kept it in great condition—no scratches, only a little wear to the cover, as I hope the photos illustrate.  The music is described as “New Grass”—definitely bluegrass in tone, but with a touch of young rockers.  They did covers for not only traditional tunes—Fox on the Run is one of my favorites on here—but also the Monkees (What Am I Doin’ Hanging Round) and the Beatles (Rocky Raccoon, in a way that makes me, a true Beatles fan, think that maybe the Beatles should have speeded up their version!).  They used guitar, banjo, hammer dulcimer, fiddle, autoharp, and even some horns.  It’s varied material, and fun to listen to.  Who could ever forget the line from You Done Stomped On My Heart:  “Sweetheart you just sorta, mashed on my aorta.”  Here’s a list of the tracks:

  • What Am I Doin’ Hanging Round
  • Devil’s Dream
  • Fox on the Run
  • Granola Opry
  • Athens County
  • Joy Bells
  • You Done Stomped On My Heart
  • Rocky Raccoon
  • Wilderness Waltz
  • Dark Hollow
  • Love Will Come Your Way
  • Irish Washerwoman
  • Sweet Ohio
  • Them Toadsuckers

A reliable source was kind enough to tell me that only 3,000 of these LPs were pressed, making it rare indeed.  Now that I have been blessed with a CD of this music, I am willing to let the LP be adopted into appreciative hands.  If you’ve never heard of the Frogwhompers, you can’t say that tomorrow!  If you’ve never heard their music before, then please place that bid, so you can’t say that a couple of weeks from now.  Thanks for your consideration.
