Beethoven Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op, 125
The "Choral" Symphony
Wilhelm Furtwangler, conductor
Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Elisabeth Honegen, Hans Hopf, Otto Edelmann
Orchestra and Chorus of the 1951 Bayreuth Festival
His Master's Voice Record 1 ALP 1286 & Record 2 ALP 1287
England, Mono, 2XRA-16=2N; 2XRA-17=2N; 2XRA-18=3N; 2XRA-19=3N
A pair of rare and beautiful looking and sounding audiophile artifacts now almost 60
years old...they still look better and sound better than most of the competion.
Condition:
Cover, record 1 is VG+ A mended tear (3/4") starting horizontally at the opening side
of the front cover, and . some creasing and laminate flake, also along the opening edge.
The rest of the cover is quite nice with good color and excellent overall condition of the
laminate the cover as a whole is flexible and strong and unblemished.
Cover, record 2 is VG++ The back cover has an unrepaired 1/2" horizontal tear starting at the middle
of the opening edge. But that is the extent of the issues big or small. Otherwise this is an excellent example
of some of the best looking and most highly functional record packages ever made, namely the British
HMV/EMI Classical issues of the early to mid 50's.
The Visual Grade for Record 1 & 2 in both cases is NM...they very good looking records.
The Play Grade for Record 1, however is VG++ due to a series of quick but noticable pops in the quieter
opening passage on side 1, a few instances of lighter, fainter crackle is also heard briefly toward the end
of the first side. I'm not sure what's up here...could be a deep cleaning issue, perhaps....
Play grade for Record 2 is NM...although I heard some moderate surface noise from time to time it was
neither intrusive nor persistent and soon forgoten.
