redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This fine LP from La Voix de son Maitre (FALP 188, French pressing, red/silver label – ED1, mono) features Wilhelm Furtwangler and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's exalted accounts of Haydn's Symphony No. 94 "Surprise" and Brahms's Haydn Variation Op. 56a.
The discographic details are as follows:
Haydn: Symphony No. 94 in G Major Hob.I-94
> rec. in the Musikvereinssaal on 11/12/17 January 1951
(producer: Walter Legge / engineer: Robert Beckett)
Brahms: Variations on a Theme by Haydn Op. 56a
> rec. in the Musikvereinssall during 30 March to 2 April 1949
(producer: Walter Legge / engineers: Douglas Larter & Anthony Griffith)
The VPO play with great warmth, the players clearly responding to their charismatic maestro.
The engaging cover design was executed by R. de Lavererie. There are superb liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Paul Hooreman.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is GOOD. There is the trace outline of a former sticker to the front panel, edgewear (more so at corners) and general wear and aging. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings and the album remains solid and attractive – overall, still a decent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Though there is occasional light surface noise, in general the playback remains quite fine. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
