After auditioning for songwriter/producer Jerry Ragovoy, “Rags” took Mimms into the studio with Bert Berns in 1963 and recorded what was to become one of the seminal songs in the emergence of soul music – “Cry Baby.” With Cissy Houston and The Sweet Inspirations providing background vocals, “the song was a gospelized production so full of the soul-saving, fire-and-brimstone ecstasies of the black sanctified church that it singularly stood apart… With “Cry Baby,” Garnet Mimms and The Enchanters were firing the first shots in the soul music revolution.” (Robert Pruter – The Best of Garnet Mimms) Picked up by United Artists, it shot up to number four on the Billboard pop chart and number one on the Cash Box R&B chart. (Years later, Janis Joplin would cover the song on her Pearl album.)

Bert Berns and Jerry Ragovoy would continue to write and produce for Garnet Mimms throughout the mid-sixties, making such delicacies as “One Girl” and “Look Away”. Their final collaboration with Mimms was the stunning 1966 hit “I’ll Take Good Care of You,” which went to number nine and lasted 16 weeks on the Cash Box R&B chart.

If you think that finding Garnet Mimms' (with or without Enchanters) soul masterpieces in STEREO is an easy task, you haven't been collecting records very long, have you? No, it's not an easy task, by any measure. As a matter of fact, this is only the third stereo copy of Garnet Mimms third (and final) album for United Artists we have ever come across. This is the last “real” album Garnet Mimms ever recorded. He also made a few mediocre comeback efforts in the mid-to-late 1970's but nothing really compares to the three mid-60's Jerry Ragovoy-produced masterpieces, one of which we hold here. And remember: if you haven't heard Garnet Mimms in action, you don't know what word "soul" means. His is the voice from heaven.  (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)           WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)            Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(d)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                                     THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-          Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4  (front side) and 2 (back side)

-          Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-          Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners and a smaller one in another.

-          Cover has two corners slightly dinged.

-          Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam and spine

-          Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)
