Description
GAYLE STAR -- The Pain Of Remembering/Memory -- ex. rare, original mid-1960's U.S. 45 single. This is an excellent and apparently completely unknown mid-1960's Dusty Springfield-style Northern Soul/Girl Group 45 credited to Gayle Star, on the tiny Tide Records label out of Los Angeles. Sound is fantastic uptempo female stomper that moves like a rocket, really unique and memorable vocal delivery on the hook "the pain of ... remem ... ber ... ing." Can't find any information on the artist or single, but a big clue is that it was arranged by Ernie Freeman, a seminal figure in early rock and R&B classics for Specialty, Modern and Aladdin, and later worked with almost every early-to-mid 1960's artist on Liberty inc. Bobby Vee, Julie London and Johnny Burnette, as well as Connie Francis, Petula Clark etc. B-side "Memory" is weepy pop ballad, nothing special to be honest (especially compared to the irresistible "Pain of Remembering"), but it was likewise arranged by a major guy, Rene Hall, who discovered Billy Ward, Clyde McPhatter & The Dominos and produced/arranged many of their early hits on Federal, and later worked at Specialty with Little Richard etc. So whoever Gayle Star was, she had some amazing help. I've never seen another copy of this one, and it's a keeper. In generic sleeve. Record: VG+, several light surface marks, label faded on one side, overall clean, on Tide label, U.S. pressing.
