Description

GENE CLARK             ROADMASTER Gene Clark is for my money the single most gifted and prolific singer/songwriter to emerge from the folk/rock explosion of the sixties. Roadmaster is yet further evidence to support this claim. His second solo outing following the equally brilliant White Light LP, begins  with two Byrds backed classics, "She's the Kind of Girl" and "One in a Hundred", the later most notably featuring the familiar ringing  chimes of Mcguinns twelve string Rickenbacker and in itself justifies buying the album. The songwriting continues with breathtaking  consistency, combining intelligent lyrics with soaring vocal harmonies. Indeed the consistency is so strong it becomes hard to believe  the majority of these songs were outtakes and are not believed to have been frontline material. Why this man never forged a successful  solo career is both a mystery and a crying shame because contained on this album is some of the best sounding music i've ever heard  and doesn't rely on gimmicks or the pretentions of the era. This is raw talent and the guy is an oasis in a sea of wishy-wishy mediocrety  that was all too common then as it is now. If you don't agree you're either deaf or ignorant.                                Review from Amazon.com This album was orignally released in 1973, sandwiched between 'White Light' and 'No Other' - generally considered to be the two best  albums Gene ever made, while 'Roadmaster' was overlooked and unfairly consigned to history as 'an out-takes album'. In my opinion  this album is at least the equal of these two albums and is a fine introduction to Gene's post-Byrd work. 'White Light' was a little sparse  in the production department, while 'No Other' went the other way with Tommy Kaye's over-the-top production getting in the way of Clark's  songs in some cases. 'Roadmaster' though was baby bear's porridge, 'Roadmaster' got it just right. The songs are among the best Clark  ever wrote, the supporting musicians (the original Byrds, the Burritos, Clarence White etc.) complement Gene's warm country-tinged  voice perfectly, and the production by former Byrdmeisters Chris Hinshaw and Jim Dickson is excellent - I just wish they had worked  with Gene more during his career. This 'out-takes album' is in my opinion Gene Clark's best, every track is good, three in particular -  Here Tonight', 'In A Misty Morning' and (especially) 'Shooting Star' - are as good as any Gene ever released and are worth the price of  the album several times over. I wholeheartedly recommend this album. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.  Review from Amazon.com Lable ~~~ A&M Cat # ~~~ 87 584 IT Jacket ~~~ EX+ Disc ~~~ EX Country ~~~ Holland All LP's will be posted out using proper mailers with stiffeners. I have been buying on eBay now for many years and have over a thousand positive feedbacks. These are the first of very many items that i now want to sell. There is a reason why i have opened a new account with eBay to sell rather than use my existing account. I have in the last 6 months or so returned to my Christian belief. I want to follow what is scriptual in disposing of what, quite honestly, has been a bit of a millstone around my neck. One day i looked around at all the many thousand items that filled two rooms and came to a dawning realisation that i had no idea what 90% of all this stuff was. I mean, i could go and buy something, play it once, log it, and that was the last i ever saw of it. So, this has handed me a golden opportunity to turn around this situation into something positive. I'm not going to 'Bible bash' or 'rant and rave', I simply want you to understand my reasoning. With this in mind, i will leave it up to you to look up 2 sets of verses, if you want to. Matthew chapter 6 verses 1-4 explains my anonymity whilst Matthew chapter 19 verses 16-21 gives my explanation for giving the lot to the Haiti Hospital Appeal. S O, D I G D E E P A N D B I D H I G H!!!! and keep watching as there lots of serious stuff to come (Unreleased Gram Parsons acetate, a couple of hundred Westwood one type radio shows, unreleased Townes Van Zandt acetate and hundreds more of similar ilk).
