Label/Format: Charisma – Original large format pink hatter with B&C credits, these have matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both in stunning condition, hugely attractive with rich colour and totally unaged. Side one has a couple of tiny and super-faint spindle traces (but look very hard to see them) and barely even a trace on side two. Very early copies of this prog classic are rarely seen better.

Cat Number: CAS 1058.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 144 grams. A very impressive weight for this one, subsequent phonogram pressings were much thinner, this B&C first issue being one the heaviest I have held.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Early pressed copies of this title are scarce especially in this type of condition. This has (had) the vertical red spine text that was later changed. But to be clear, the red has faded (as red text on spines so often do). The vertical text now appears more white, but when viewed under a magnifier, a hint of the original red is seen. So, all the text is still present, but no longer red, all the other spine ink has not faded and as stated, red ink on spines tends to do this over time. Another cover that springs to mind that has this problem, is the first Black Sabbath album, the red on that spine fades in the same way (I am sure there are many others as well).

Run-Out Groove Etchings: ‘PORKY’ / ‘PECKO’ – all this information on quite narrow run-out areas, this early cut issue utilised most of the playing area room for maximum dynamic range with it’s wider grooves.

Musicians: Tony Banks – Organ, mellotron, piano, electric piano, 12-string, voices; Steve Hackett – Electric guitar, 12 string and 6 string solo; Phil Collins - drums, voices, assorted percussion; Peter Gabriel – lead vocal; flute, bass drum, tambourine, oboe; Michael Rutherford – bass, bass pedals, 12 string guitar, voices, cello.

Brief Info: The fourth Genesis album and third on Charisma, this one was not issued on the pink label, this is A first B&C credited large hatter original. A super album it is too, and by now the band were fast gaining a cult following within the progressive market. Gabriel’s on-stage theatricals were getting more dramatic and the music was getting increasingly complex and adventurous. ‘Foxtrot’ includes the live stage favourite in the long ‘Supper’s Ready’ which occupies most of side two and is broken into seven segments. It starts off with the classic ‘Watcher of the Skies’ and there is no filler material on this classic prog set. This album is beautifully packaged too with a fantastic cover and this vintage copy includes the original Charisma inner bag too, also in superb condition. This copy looks very little played – any minor surface blemishes largely ignored – and is likely to please most Genesis fans. As most will know, a typical Genesis and prog-rock album of volume and very quiet passages, so absolute silence from a vinyl record (of any age), is a very difficult ask. But this has little to fault and my play-grade prove very enjoyable. Again I do remind, the red text on the spine has faded to white, but is still present.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: but being honest, this looks considerably better. An unlaminated gatefold format that is textured front and back (the inside is smooth). Like the labels, this cover has the original B&C credits and was printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. This one has (or now more accurately, HAD) the spine text in red and reading vertically – the red had faded to white, but is still present. The original ‘Charisma puts a little colour in our cheeks’ promotional inner sleeve is also included.

Cover Front: This gorgeous artwork cover has blemishes, but most are minor with little visual impact. The front itself has little to fault and has hardly aged or discoloured at all. An ultra faint sticker residue trace near the top right corner only really shows (and only just at that) under angled light and the same for a gentle surface crease near the bottom edge. Lovely fresh colour with no rubbing to the fragile textured surface, no tears or press marks, this will take some beating.

Cover Back: The back is very similar with just a faint and fine press mark near the centre, it shows very little again and very little detracts from the the beauty of this lovely graphic. The lack of ringwear is always a major plus as well.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little short of as made and looking marvellous, any rub blemishes very faint and this sets a very high standard.

Top Edges: Both very solid and mainly straight with any surface rubs very light with only a little darkening traces here and there, mainly near the more vulnerable ends.

Bottom Edges: The back edge has some central rubbing which is near moderate, the front has little. These storage edges seldom escape with nothing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and mostly very sharp with little wear at all, any thickening or burring tiny and light as viewed critically end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Very solid, quite thick and straight with barely any hint of compression. Also folded quite close to square so the edges meet up closely together but not quite parallel. Again – this is the first red vertical spine text format, but the red ink has faded to almost white – the title near the centre is now quite faint being honest. Most other text is still there and readable close up. There appears minimal fading of the rest of the spine artwork which is still quite strong and fully present with barely any hint of rubbing or wear, even the folds have avoided scuffs or abrasions. Red ink fades more freely than other colours with exposure to natural light – fact – so hardly unusual, this is still a very impressive original spine but just lacking the text detail.

Corners: Most of any corner tip rubbing is small and light, very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: Not perfect, but still a very attractive all-round example of this wear-prone early 1970’s cover, one that could prove very difficult indeed to find much better. Rarely seen so clean and fresh, this visually impressive sleeve should please many collectors. With many seen as later print examples, fewer available earlier ones will be seen often a great deal better.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(–): a superb example and great indication that LP has rarely been removed as this looks little handled or aged. Clean, very fresh and brightly coloured with barely any creases and all edges unsplit with NO repairs. Only the earliest examples of this album included this lovely Charisma inner which was always highly prone to ringwear which this has avoided. Even the top recessed opening is crisp and very need indeed, as can be seen, it has the shaped corners which are vented on the bottom.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT(+): any surface marks are ultra fine and faint with no penetrating stylus marks at all. These seen with scrutiny under bright angled light, as are a little dulling patches within the pressing that are totally superficial and non-sounding. A super visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy that looks very little played and this is not an easy record to find like this. Visually an impressive early-pressed record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Peter Gabriel-era Genesis record plays up to it’s high visual grading and most-all beyond with very little to fault, and Genesis albums are never easy on vinyl with many very quiet passages and complex structured music. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and very gentle and little unwanted registered. The odd faint surface trace is near impossible to avoid totally as is the odd sporadic tick or two on a quiet segment. But this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album. I also remind I play-grade all my records on a very revealing system as listed further down. Few copies will outperform this early B&C pressing significantly I feel sure. As I have said many times before, if the odd minor sound blemish is not acceptable, stick to the clinical silence of the CD (but lose the fine details and realism only the record will offer). Few records of this type will ever play ‘silent’ throughout, the format barely allows it and pressing quality from the 1970s onwards was seldom 1960s standard. Charisma records were also quite variably in pressing quality sometimes with invisible pressing sounds and even distortions – none were heard on this splendid copy. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Very little, if indeed anything spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and is strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
