Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces being very few, fine and faint. You will be very hard-pressed to find an original copy of this album with fewer and all evidence suggests this record has been played very little. Side one has a light encircled ‘C’ near the 9 o’clock position as can be clearly seen on my scan. Being relatively fine and faint, and certainly neat, it detracts little but does represent the most significant ‘blemish’ on this set for the uncompromising connoisseur collector.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams. A very impressive weight for any record and above somewhat average for it’s era.

Rarity: Originals on the pink scroll label are now very scarce and getting genuinely quite rare, especially in anything like decent conditions.

Brief Info: The third Genesis album and second on Charisma. A hard one to find that plays well on the first label, so-much-so, I never have any qualms in offering Hatter pressings. By now the band were fast gaining a cult following within the progressive market. Gabriel’s on-stage theatricals were getting more dramatic and the music was getting more complex and adventurous. This album is beautifully packaged too with a bizarre colourful, surreal cover. This is a quality example for the more discerning collector. With Charisma records, I always expect minor blemishes at best and their pressings were often variable in quality. That added to a complex recording with a number of quiet passages, all meaning this is a very difficult title. This one has little unwanted but absolute silence is a near impossibility. Nothing of any note spoilt my enjoying listening to this copy, this too being played on a very revealing system. It will prove hard to find in better all-round condition and nothing beats a first issue of this evergreen prog classic.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): this being ultra critical and it actually looks better still. An unlaminated gatefold format that is textured on both front and back (later ones were smooth). The inside is smooth finished. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group and of course, having the B&C credits as seen on my close-up picture.

Cover Front: A beautiful cover that retains fantastic colour and freshness with hardly any traces of rubbing and no speckle at all to the raised parts of the texturing. Very clean with no scuffing or fading, any creasing is ultra fine and faint and barely anything even registers. The textured surface is very pronounced and near maximum justice is done to the wonderful artwork. Just the odd tiny tip rub seen and even this is being very critical. A lovely, classic progressive rock front cover that almost sets the standard.

Cover Back: Practically the same as the front with just a rub on the bottom right corner area. Also one small scuff mark that is almost certainly to small to be seen on my picture – it registers little even when seeting the real thing. The lack of ringwear and grubbiness to a cover very prone to wear is great news too and both front and back will be very difficult to find better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside here at all, both faces look lovely with rich, deep colour and minimal traces of handling.

Top Edges: Very light, slightly patchy rubbing. Avoiding a little on this cover will prove very difficult.

Bottom Edges: Near moderate to moderate, more consistent rubbing on these clearly vulnerable storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with barely any hint of wear and both guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on the back edge, the front being closed.

Spine and Text: Solid, thick and robust, straight with any compression slight. Folded square so the edges meet up closely together and parallel. There is some rubbing to the ends, but the main surface area shows little wear at all. There is a natural very fine central crease that occurs over time simply by opening. The graphic and text is little affected and most-all is present, clean and devoid of fading or grubbiness. More unusually still, both folds are near devoid of rubbing as well. Just a rub on the back one near the very bottom.

Corners: The corners have rubbed in context to the edges, being light to moderate. I have rarely (if indeed ever) seen this original cover devoid of rubbing on the spine ends for which this seems clearly extra vulnerable. Very fine to excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A difficult cover for sure, the early examples rarely, if ever escape some wear. In context, this is a strong example with practically all of any wear being on the vulnerable edges. Modest edge wear is far more preferable to wear on the main four faces, and in this respect, this has barely. So this gorgeous cover can be held and enjoyed to the near maximum – one to show off, not hide away awaiting a better one. This should please many, if not most collectors and even the more discerning can consider it too.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white unlined inner that has aged little with any discolouration very light as are any creases. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) to EXCELLENT(++): with a few ultra fine and faint hairlines seen directly under angled light – there are NO penetrating scratches on this record and this appears little played. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, with impressive shine, intense black and heavily pressed (as you would expect from an early pressing). Visually a well-preserved vintage record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This prog-rock classic plays for most-all even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. And being on Charisma, this is always far from certain. Regarding bad pressings: Charisma pink labels give me more problems than most (apart from early orange RCA). Often inconsistent, sometimes with pressing sounds even though unmarked. The early Van der Graaf Generator albums are notoriously difficult to find with clean, trouble-free sound and Genesis albums are sometimes the same. This early pink pressing has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This has all the dynamics and sonic range you would want from the earliest issues. Any surface sounds are minimal and few, mild traces on the odd very quiet passage or two are near impossible to avoid totally. But here very gentle, brief and light and few will ever play silent or much better than this. No pops and any clicks few and very faint, just enough to remind you are listening to a near 41-year-old record, many actually think it’s part of the vinyl experience and consider it totally normal, and being honest, it’s true. The pressing quality on this one is high and there is no sound degrading with perfect clarity and focus retained. Remember, I play all my records on a very revealing system and as can be seen further down, I list all my equipment to reitterate the point, nothing to hide, just fact. Nothing or any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this classic Genesis album. A difficult album for all the reasons mentioned above, but this is a lovely all-round copy. This pink original will prove very difficult to find significantly better and is strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
